You have to actually get approved by the government in order to receive food stamps. Even if you meet the criteria to qualify for food stamps you can get rejected for any reason (or no reason at all.)

Are they seriously going to approve a college student who's having no trouble getting food?

College students are ineligible for Food Stamps unless they meet one of the exceptions.

Working 20 hours per week is one. Being involved in a federally funded work study program is the other one that students without kids use.
