What do you plan to do while visiting? If you like snorkeling/scuba then Belize is hard to beat.

Buckeye- were you the one that gave recommendations in my Roatan thread a few months back?

I was. Have you gone yet? If not eat at Cals Temporary Cantina. Amazing food with an amazing view. Cal doesn't have much of a personality but he can cook.

I was on Roatan several weeks ago and can make other recommendations and post pics if you'd like. We've been twice and will go again. There are only a few islands we go back to and Roatan is on the short list.

I echo what others have said. Belize has some cool excursion type stuff to do, but outside the tourist zone it isn't that safe (the workers in the tourist zone need to show ID to enter) and you're not supposed to be out after dark gallivanting around.

Outside of Belize City (which you don't really want to spend any time in anyway) there aren't really a lot of safety issues in Belize. Any of the Islands (Cayes) or anywhere on the coast really, is generally fine as I understand it.

Im in st kitts and I would recommend it to people who like exploring nature. There are awesome views and hiking areas, also great restaurants. But the beaches, outside of one we found today are not what you think when you think carribean

We're going to St Kitts next May. Have a villa rented that overlooks Nevis. Very excited about that trip.

Looks like Belize is a no go now. Southwest doesn't start flying there again until October. I'm pretty dead set on not going to Punta Cana.

Now I'm looking at Jamaica. Certainly not my first choice, but I've never been there. I'm running out of options trying to find a place we haven't been to before that Southwest flies into.

Went to Placencia for my Honeymoon a few years ago. Hung out at Barefoot a lot and generally just chilled for a week. One of the best trips ever, can't wait to go back. Hell I even thought about moving there after that week

Stayed at Chabil Mar Villas while there...it was pretty much empty which made everything that much better.

That was my exact honeymoon too. I loved that place. The tarpon fishing was excellent. The reef was great. ANd like you said, almost no one.

Belize is very poor and offers no nightlife I'd feel safe exploring.

We drove the little golf cart all over Ambergris Caye, no problem at all.

Mainland? Probably woudln't stray too far, but really never felt in danger even in the jungle.

we did tours of Xunantunich and went to the Jaguar Reserve (rock sliding was the tits) for our little excursions. Didn't do any fishing or anything like that (ex-wife isn't fond of the ocean )

The people there were amazingly friendly and everything was so laid back. They have some efficiency type places down near the end of the road that are stupid cheap that I'll probably end up renting if I ever get to go back. Chabil Mar was great for a honeymoon, but pretty expensive.

Went to Coco Plum Belize for my honeymoon and it was awesome. Its about a 20 acre island off the coast of Dangriga. You stay in your own cabana. Great food and service. There's paddle boarding, kayaking, and snorkeling trips everyday, plus trips to see Mayan ruins and jungle tours etc. Outside of the capital, there really is no crime in Belize, plus everyone speaks English. Very reasonably priced too.

Xunantunich

Very cool place, also seen some Amish folk down there too (who knew). I thought about the same thing, staying at those other places, although Chabil Mar was pretty awesome.
Locals are some of the friendliest I have met in my travels. Although, I picked up that they were not to fond of the Asians around.

If you want to snorkel and dive, I would highly recommend Roatan. We snorkeled everyday by just walking out to the beach and swimming to the reef. We saw 2 sea turtles, a barracuda, 1 giant sting ray, 1 big Octopus, bunch of starfish, 1 moray eel, bunch of spotted eels, bunch of conchs, and tons and tons of tropical fish. I'll post some pics in a bit. And we never paid for 1 trip, we packed our own snorkel gear and used swimming pool noodles to float on. They had snorkel boats you could pay to take you out, but we just swam out to where they were.

I would say neither place has a good night life..

I enjoyed Belize way more than Punta Cana.

like others have said, outside of Belize City there is basically zero crime. I've been multiple times and it's were I'm going to retire too. If you get the chance to go, you need to stay on Ambergris Caye. It's very safe. Also there are a lot of Americans that live down there and the locals all speak English, as it's the official language.

I've been to Belize twice and stayed in San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) both times and loved it. If you are into diving/snorkeling, I'd highly recommend taking a trip that brings you to the blue hole and half moon caye. Half moon caye is a place I will never forget.

It caters to nothing but tourists and divers. Of course Ambergris Caye is safe. San Pedro does seem to change a little when the sun goes down. I found the people to be very friendly. Belize City seems more than a little rough.
