This morning, Saturday, January 7, 2023, the body of a whale was discovered a few hundred yards south of the beach near Henderson Park in Pass Christian. The Institute of Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS) asks that the general public and recreational boats avoid this area as they are conducting an investigation on the species and cause of death. Additionally, IMMS is attempting to anchor the remains before the high tides come in and will eventually move the body at a later date. The Gazebo Gazette will keep the general public informed about the species of the whale, cause of death, and how it goes here once it receives a statement from the IMMS.

This could be my one shot to poke a dead whale with a stick!

From that pic, it looks like a Bryde’s whale, which are very endangered. They believe less than 100 are left in the GOM.

Most of my marine mammal studies took place in the North Gulfport area.
