m not far removed from college.

My parents covered my fees (TOPS covered tuition) freshman year while I lived at home. We had a falling out over stupid shite (I was young and dumb, knew everything).
I moved out, got a pretty good paying job waiting tables 40-50 hrs/week, and told them I could take care of myself, if I needed help I'd ask for it.

My last semester in college they covered my final 6 hours as a graduation present. As a result I got to manage a bar (made less money than waiting tables). Made for a hell of a fun last semester.

Out of all the kids in my family, I was the only one that graduated with no debt and good credit. I was also the only one that got little to no financial help.

My kids will get what they need, but they most certainly will not get what they

Nice props to you........

Son is a sophomore, he has a full scholarship & even more that leaves him with $2500/semester spending money, he’s an athlete & is busy with practice, works 20+ hrs/wk, is also in a frat.... Truck is paid for & he pays everything except his truck insurance. I am super proud & don’t know how he does it honestly.

I don't understand parents who tell kids they are on their own after high school. To me, it's part of what I signed up for when I joined the daddy club.

If I am going to push them academically for 12 years, demand excellence, and constantly hold college over them as the goal, how can I not pay for college?
i really don’t get how someone can even pay for everything on their own in college anyways. With how expensive everything school related now is it’s just not going to happen without going into massive debt for an undergrad degree

It's not easy, but I assure you it can be done. A lot of kids I knew in college would bitch about taking out loans. However, they were paying exorbitant rent, had a new car, are out all the time, etc.

I was lucky I had TOPS. It helped me a ton. I worked my arse off while in school though. Didn't go on a nice spring break/summer vacation one time while in school. I missed out on a lot.

I also missed out on the 400/month loan payment post college. Its allowed me to do stuff now that wouldn't have been an option otherwise.

Those days where I had an internship from 8-12, class from 12:30-3, then a shift waiting tables from 4-12, were fricking brutal. Completely worth it in the end.

My last two years , I paid for everything cash, tuition and trips included. Thank you internships!

Covered everything.

They both finished with no debt.

I agreed to buy them a new vehicle after graduation.

I wanted them to have opportunities I didn’t. In fact son walks across stage at Pmac this morning

Aparently you do. To live in the ghetto and seriously risk getting mugged walking to your car in Baton Rouge is going to run you $500 a month. COA just for tuition, fees, and books at LSU is probably 15-18k if I had to guess. Therefor your 2 options are work enough to not take out that much in loans and let your grades suffer and not graduate on time or cripple yourself with debt and pay back your student loans for the first 10 years at least of your career.

My parents fell in that category of make too much for me to get assistance but not enough to afford to pay for me to go to school. Granted, I'll be the first to admit that I could have lived more frugally, but I would have still had to take out lines. It was worth it for me though because I now have friends all over the country who work for great companies that I'll have connections at and I have a great career as well. I look at it as an investment in myself, both professionally and personally, and if looked through that lense the ROI will be really really high.

You got the rest of your life to deal with all that stuff, no need to rush them and make them stressed out during college. Let them enjoy themselves if you can afford it. Glad I am not your kid.

For many people that would be a great decision and it’s a shame they can’t look at it like that.

My son lives with his sister(really close to McNeese), he's a sophomore and she's getting masters. They both work. My son is still 18 so I give them $150/week. His school is paid for by academic scholarship, wish I could do more for them.

All 3 of my son's had full ride academic scholarships at the local community college. When they screwed up and lost them due to shitty grades. I said "welcome to student loans". I paid rent, cars, insurance, cell phones and gave/give a little for spending, (Not much). They need to figure it out and grow up. My youngest son saw his brothers mistakes and has not repeated them.

Gave them a tank of gas and two boxes of condoms. Told them I would see them at Christmas to replenish, but if they were going to run out of one or the other I would recommend getting a bike because the consequences of walking/riding a bike v. learning to change diapers and paying child support are not comparable.
