First to the Guns
Battle of Wilson's Creek, August 10, 1861
Artwork by Mort Kunstler

Only three weeks after Manassass, the first major Civil War battle in the West was fought at Wilson's Creek near Springfield, Missouri.

Confederate Colonel James McIntosh, above, led a charge of the Third Louisiana Infantry against a Union battery, an incident that helped turn the battle in the Confederate's favor. A few months later, at Pea Ridge in Arkansas, a Northern army defeated the Southerners and kept Missouri in the Union.

“In the first major battle of the western theatre, a Louisiana brigade, carrying their state 'pelican' flag overran a federal artillery position and helped turn the tide into another victory for the South.”

My great grandfather was captured at Pea Ridge, sent to a prison in Vicksburg where he escaped and then help organize Confederate units to fight for the cause !

I hope we don't have to change our state flag.

Union forces had pushed the Confederates out of Missouri in the months between Wilson's Creek and Pea Ridge. The Battle of Pea Ridge was the result of a Confederate counter-offensive to break through the Union army and re-enter Missouri. It failed.

I have that framed print in my outdoor kitchen. As a history note, the La motto used to be "Justice Union Confidence" before Reconstruction Carpetbaggers and Scalawags changed it to "Union Justice Confidence".

Like it. I did a tour of some of the Civil War sites while working in Mo.It seemed the South was outgunned but not for loss of spirit.

I live next door to the battlefield. They were firing the cannons, rattling my windows, yesterday. I love it here.
