Yeah no doubt GM/s quality went to crap and has continued to erode, that wasn't my point. He wouldn't buy Japanese products, cars, electronics or anything else.
Funny thing is he was an Opal dealer for awhile along with Buick, Olds and GMC and I guess had no problem with German manufacturers as he didn't ever fight them.

The older I get the more I realize the importance of paying respect to the flag. You're not paying respect to a piece of cloth. You're paying respect to the men that died defending it. This isn't a country of soil. It's the people. Without people willing to die for it, all of our symbols and traditions are meaningless.
Well said!!

Another MacArthur special. Shouldn't have gone to peleliu shouldn't have gone to the Philippines. But because good ol dugout Doug threatened to run for president as a republican thousands of sailors, soldiers, and marines paid the price.
thanks for the assessment. Always appreciate those who make them with the benefit of hindsight and from the security of their safe little room in a home unthreatened by war or burdened by real time consequences and responsibilities.
I look forward to the judgement of your actions after you're dead by someone completely disconnected from the things that influenced your decisions

Peleliu and other islands after it were a big part of the reasoning for dropping A-bombs.

My grandfather fought the Japs at Peleliu.
I was with him and my grandmother at the World's Fair in 1984. When we got to the area where all the different countries had their exhibits, he looked up at the Jap flag, turned to grandma and said "Let's go" and we left.
He couldn't believe they allowed them to fly that thing over American soil. To the day he died, he couldn't stand the sight of those people.
I knew a lot of old guys who fought the Japanes and felt that way. It was a far more savage war than even what was going on in Europe.
I had a distant cousin who was severely wounded in the hills of Peleliu. He survived to become the police chief of Baker.

Supernova in the East went over this in great detail.

Chesty Puller wanted to skip the island, but Nimitz overrode Puller.
Dad had a number of "short snorters" signed by WWII admirals and generals that he flew back from the Pacific after the war. One was signed by Chesty Puller. Someone swiped it from the "Marine Room."

This book tells the whole story...Almost unbelievable brutality.

My PaPa was a seabee on Peleliu. He (now me) has a KBar he found in a landing ship. A buddy of his took some plexiglass from a downed zero cockpit cover and made a bad arse handle from it on the knife. He said while they were reconstructing the runway they could hear the Marines fighting off in the distance. Said he always felt so bad for them when he would see them come back from the front.
He got to help construct a monument made from the corral on the island to the fallen Marines. Always said it was the proudest job he ever did and and honor.
