Good luck fighting the bus stigma.
exactly
I guess they should spend 3x as much so it won't be a bus

One of the reasons for narrowing government street to 3 lanes is to allow for a streetcar line to run down government street from the river center and casinos to brcc and independence park

Probably a sound investment.
And I'm only partially joking this time.

Yes, that was a joke. About how bad BR drivers are.
oh
BR drivers so bad they make bad drivers look not bad

gentrification will rid us of them .
Gentrification is in full swing along nicholson and going north and east from campus. The streetcar combined with the water campus, river district, and new lsu developments on the north side should jump start gentrification to push the trash out of the area between nicholson and highland. The gays are already getting their interior designers and contractors ready to chip away west of park just as they have been succeeding in bouregard town.
The new train station should help that area of government between park and i-10 as well.
Good times ahead in baton rouge.

If they ever want pedestrians to use that corridor, they'd ditch the bike lanes and install parallel parking spaces. A line of cars creates a physical barrier separating the pedestrians from traffic creates a sense of safety and eliminates the needs for abundant surface parking for businesses.
I think the two center lanes on North Blvd would be more ideal for light rail....especially since it could use the North Blvd overpass over the rail line. Park Ave/Dalrypmple btw North Blvd and LSU would be good as well, but you'd lose some street parking.

They did it last fall with cones on their trial run and it worked beautifully.

the rail station for the BR-NOLA commuter train is going to be on gov that is why the city is planning on putting BRT/light rail on gov.

I know that...but I also don't think there's quite enough right of way for both a center turn lane and dual light rail tracks.
It's only about 56' wide from curb to curb. You can probably do two automobile lanes near the street centerline with a light rail track on each side, but you'd have to widen the road at major intersections if you wanted turn lanes.
Same with North Blvd. You could install dual rail lines, but you'd pretty much turn it into a two lane road....of course if you installed rail lines in the center, people could possibly cross over them when necesary like a boulevard. Big trucks won't be able to do that.

well said, bob. it's exciting to see we're not calling BR a lost cause.
quote:completely agree and would be a great way to do it but they only have about 42' to work with. they're proposing two 11' lanes and a 12' center turn lane, which only leaves 8'...enough room for parking on one side of the street only and no bike lanes. i read that it's still too early to tell if they'll go with bike lanes or not.

The proposed platform is actually going on the tracks between Government and North Blvd along 15th so passenger trains can sit there without blocking traffic (because of the North Blvd overpass).
North Blvd would, IMO, be a better route out of downtown than Government for light rail because of the existing overpass, proximity to the future BR-NOLA train platform, and proximity to the CATS bus hub on 22nd....but I do think that it should extend east of 22nd street on Government somehow.

Bike lanes will draw a lot of morons who use it for exercise and rarely stop at any of the businesses. Street parking will encourage pedestrians by creating a physical barrier and eliminate the need for surface parking lots, encouraging businesses to orient towards the street....like they do on Magazine or Prytania in New Orleans.
If they go with bike lanes, they'd be making an incredibly stupid mistake. Either put the bikes lanes somewhere else or have them share the lanes with the cars.

The street car occupies the center lane
Posted on 9/10/14 at 11:05 am to kingbob
so the street car needs to share the center lane with all the left turners?
or do you do away with left turns?
or do you do away with left turns?

most BRT systems do away with left turn lanes. I am not sure about light rail and streetcar though.

I would have to walk down Aster to get there and it would most likely be late at night to go to Boudreaux and Thibodeaux's. That's a scary thought
