I spent some time in Tallahassee and it struck me how different the 2 cities are, yet possess similar attributes. Both state capitals are older cities that are home to large public universities and HBCUs. Both are similar in size, with BR being a little bigger but with a declining population and Tallahassee’s population size increasing. Tallahassee isn’t a “safe” city and has its crime problems but it’s much safer than BR and BR’s crime problems are getting worse.

Tallahassee felt like a city on the rise while BR continues to decline. BR officials should look at Tallahassee as the model for turning things around

BR could throw a dart at a map, strive to be that place, and probably do better

Tallahassee was smart enough to put the interstate on the fringe of town and not right through the city bottlenecking traffic.

What city shouldn’t BR strive to be more like? Our city is a shithole

Years ago we sent a committee to Austin to try to study how to be more like them. I'm sure they ate and drank a lot on the taxpayer's dime. That's about all that ever became of it though.

Well the latitude is close but it will NEVER be on the same longitude.

Not even Kip could make that happen.

They tried to emulate Austin City Limits concert series at Basin Music Hall in a partnership with local tv station WLFT, but they started their concert series in February 2020

About the only commonality between Austin and BR is the traffic.

Your post didn't actually outline what you believe Baton Rouge should do that Tallahassee does, other than "reduce crime", I suppose

Oh, I agree. It was a pipe dream. But I don't really think they had any intention of actually trying to make BR better

In the 1970’s, the cities were almost identical in demographics, population size, gdp, etc. However, Austin exploded with growth and BR didn’t. Austin jumped on the tech wagon while BR’s oil boom went bust in the 80’s. Austin made itself a boutique destination city by marketing itself as a place for weird funky art hippies while Baton Rouge had Cash Money Records taking over for the 99 and the 2000’s.

Tallahassee is surprisingly hilly. You’d think of Florida being such a flat state that Tallahassee would also be flat. Interesting topography in and around Tallahassee.

Fun Fact about Tallahassee:

It was the only capital of a Confederate state not deemed worthy of occupation by Federal troops during the late War of Northern Aggression.

That’s what made me think about this, I remember a committee studying to be more like Austin. If they were being realistic, Tallahassee should have been the goal and not Austin
