USS Kidd’s service in World War II effectively ended when a Japanese kamikaze plane struck it off Okinawa on April 11, 1945. Its days as a warship came to a close in 1964, and the destroyer has served as a military museum in Baton Rouge for the past 34 years.

The gaming company wanted to add a World War II-era Fletcher-class destroyer, and the Kidd provides a unique opportunity to view exactly what that looks like. Only three other Fletcher-class ships remain as military museums; others were extensively altered during the Korean War. Although World War II equipment was removed from the Kidd, it did not receive any postwar structural changes.
“That’s why we were able to back-fit to World War II,” said Tim NesSmith, ship superintendent with the USS Kidd Veterans Museum. “We’ve had about 90 tons of equipment added to her since she arrived in Baton Rouge.”
In addition to its research of photographs and archival documents, World of Warships representatives visited the Baton Rouge museum in 2013 to film and observe the ship’s details. NesSmith was impressed with the how committed they were to the intricacies of how the ship worked and asked some questions that neither he nor the ship’s former curator could answer.

I bet it also helps that we have a small video game developer presence in Baton Rouge as well.

That's pretty cool. The digital version looks "weathered" like the then 12 year old Kidd probably looked during it's Korean tour.

Hanks, perhaps the season’s most glaring Oscar snub for his title character work in the Clint Eastwood-directed Sully, plays Commander George Krause. That puts him in charge of a ship again, just as he was in Captain Phillips. But this is a different mission. Krause is a career Navy officer finally given command of a Navy destroyer where, along with the enemy he fights his self-doubts and personal demons to prove he belongs. The title comes from the battleship. Deadline revealed last September that Hanks and Schneider were plotting this voyage.
This one was put together and is fully financed by FilmNation with a budget in the $30 million range. Hanks adapted the script from The Good Shepherd, a novel by C.S. Forester, the English author whose works also included the Horatio Hornblower series as well as The African Queen, adapted into the 1951 John Huston-directed film with Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn.
Very cool indeed that they are using a real Fletcher Class Destroyer for the film. I hope the "Greyhound" title sticks.
Will also be cool to have Tom Hanks film something in Baton Rouge.

No. They are based in Nicosia, Cyprus. This is the same company that developed World of Tanks, which is almost a Pay To Win Game.
