The city-parish filed suit today in 19th Judicial District Court against the architects and general contractor involved in the design and construction of the under-construction downtown library, which has been on hold since a structural failure was detected in April. In its lawsuit, filed late today, the city names WHLC Architecture, which also serves as project manager; Schwartz/Silver Architects of Massachusetts, WHLC’s joint venture partner on the project; Buquet & Leblanc, the general contractor; and their insurance companies for breach of contract, negligence, breach of warranties, misrepresentations and breach of good faith and fair dealing. The suit, which comes after several weeks of mediation hearings involving all the parties, seeks unspecified damages and a jury trial.

They should be able to convert that into a McDonald’s pretty easily.

BR can’t even build a fancy homeless shelter. Nice waste of money here.

shite like this is why I will never vote for another tax in BR. I have 0 confidence any money will be spent responsibly. Not only did we not need a library downtown, we screw it up and waste even more money in court/repairs etc.

It is a shame because road/green light/traffic improvement is sorely needed. Also, a mental health facility would help tremendously. But time and time again, money is wasted, stolen, given to political cronies.

A busted ice cream machine would make more money than a library. Especially a library in East Baton Rouge parish.

Ignorant. This library situation is not the fault of the city.

So who is supposed to reel in these different independent agencies when they get out of control?

The administration and Metro Council should have some kind of control, right?

But I agree it's not the city's fault the structure failed.

Bitch, I've done plenty of nice buildings around town. If they would have used local consultants this shite would have never happened.

But they wanted to build a monument to themselves.

They could have renovated what the already had.

I don't disagree that the parish Library system is over funded, but this isn't their fault.

They wanted a contemporary, iconic building and entrusted the architects and builder to provide that. There are many unnecessary public buildings that aren't collapsing due to flawed design.

The fact that it's collapsing doesn't have anything to do with the library board's hubris and deep pockets. Someone on the design team fricked up.

That project could have been fricked up too with the wrong architect.
