My kid currently goes to St. Michael and I'm happy with the education he is getting and the quality of the environment there. The principal there is really good, and they are a pretty focused faculty.
Speaking honestly, my kid would not be successful at CHS. He's a straight C student with no connections who runs middle of the pack in track and cross country. Catholic wouldn't take this kid no matter how much I bribed them. You might wind up with a C student one day. There's plenty of them. Not on the OT, of course. But when it came to my kid, he found a good fit at St. Michael. There are high and low achievers at any school, but the point of my post is this. Don't force Catholic if your kid clearly won't fit in. Catholic is a great school. Not just good. Great. But it's not for everyone. They will even tell you that at open house.
Go for the great fit before the great school. If Catholic is a great fit, go for it. If not, there are great experiences elsewhere. If your kid has what it takes to get into a big time college, he will get in regardless of high school. Some kids don't even become good students until college. I'm one of them. I went to a public school in the sticks and pulled a 3.6 at LSU. That's not even OT adjusted.

I went to STM and then CHS. I can't even remember the application...I think my parents did it all and I showed up for an interview. Don't remember anything about it except showing up and talking to someone for a few minutes. It was laid back. ETA: I had all A's at STM and played multiple sports...this thread makes it seem like sports actually matter.
The most important criteria seemed to be that you were Catholic, TBH. Everyone I knew growing up was Catholic...I had no idea how rare this was until I went to college and started meeting all of the other denominations and was friends with a Jew. I only remember meeting one other person from a non-Catholic background growing up and it was a Morman with whom I played baseball.
I never really had a choice of where I was going.
I would not go to STM now. That area of BR has really turned for the worse. I would recommend St. Jude or St. A if I had a kid.

You may have already touched on this but do you already live near one of the schools?
nope.
I live in the good ole LP currently, but will be looking to move back in about 2 years, about a year before he starts kindergarten. Still saving to get a new house, although sending my kids to catholic school will be cheaper than day care.
I have no intentions of sending my kids to public schools and i don't want to raise them in the LP, nothing against it, i just want my kids having the opportunity to go to a school that will prepare them for college and expect their students to go to college, and i dont think that kind of environment is at public schools in LA.
I know I will do my part as a parent, but having the right school only furthers it.
I know at my high school, i never thought about not going to college, and my school did a good job of getting me ready for it and instilling that kind of environment.

As others have said, so long as you're enrolled at any of the catholic middle schools, you have an advantage getting into CHS. CHS makes no distinction between the catholic middle schools during the admissions process.
CHS is a great school but it's very middle class. Tuition at CHS is only about $1000 more a year than SMHS. Because of CHS's vast alumni base's donations, the school is able to reduce the cost of education by over $2000 per student.

Just curious ... what is tuition like at Catholic high schools in BR?
We moved from BR 17 years ago and ours attend a Catholic high school where we live ... just curious to compare tuition.

One year at St. Michael, including tuition and various fees, is about $8,400.
That's more than I paid in tuition for all four years at LSU combined.

Wow, I forgot about those things, so good. I remember I had 2nd hour off junior year and 7th off senior year and they would let us take a free cookie when they made them
