Why cant reasonable parents determine if their 10 year old is competant enough to follow the rule.
I think 10 is a little on the young side to be responsible for a 6 and 2yo for half an hour, regardless of where they are.

America was built on leaving children in vehicles.

For the record, I don’t believe everyone who does this should necessarily be arrested, but I get the idea behind the law. Kids die in these situations every year so clearly we can’t just rely on parental judgement. It’s easy enough to avoid.
I like having it be at the discretion of the responding officer. Just ran into the store for 30 seconds to pay for gas? OK whatever. 30 minutes with a 10 year old taking care of a a kindergartner and toddler? Eh....just doesn’t sound like a good idea.
And that’s setting aside the fact that there was oxy in the car.

Same here. Me and my two younger sisters were often left in the car when mom went into the supermarket to pick up a few things. Nobody thought much of it back then from what I could tell.

I don't. I was just citing an example. The world doesn't scare me.

It was a different age. I also remember being like six or seven and my grandmother stopping by the quick sack to send me inside to get her a pack of Pall Mall Gold and some candy for me.
