No, California doesn't require it to sit for the exam. If you don't go to law school, you have to meet what is essentially apprenticeship requirements to sit for it.

did she pass the actual bar or the year 1 bar they make people going through apprenticeships take to make sure they’re actually learning something

1. She didn't take the real Bar
2. California has the hardest Bar exam in the country. You don't have to go to law school to take it - it's difficult enough and requires such knowledge that anyone that can pass it can be a lawyer
