Does anyone break up fights anymore, or are they just recording everything vertically?

In this day and age.....no. Even if those students had been inclined to step in, they probably would have been suspend or expelled for getting involved. Hell, even teachers are afraid to step in at times for fear of being sued.
We used to praise and reward those brave enough to stand up for those weaker than us. Now it's all about criminal's rights and "Worldstar!"Our priorities have become so fricked up it's scary.
