Got a Sr that plays 3 sports and runs track. The HS gives them an end of the day study hall to help them keep studies in order. He'll spend 3-4 hrs a week at home studying. He's a 3.2 student fwiw.

It was a parent of a 5th grader believe it or not, and a few other parents also said their 5th grader was loaded down too.
My son is in 5th grade now and since he started school has never comes close to spending 2-3 hours on homework. More like 15-30 minutes a night.

I might have had 30 min - 1 hour, and those were the nights when I didn't do it during class or couldn't do it the morning before.
This. In middle school I played sports and I did most of my homework the morning before class. In high school, I would have practice, then go workout after. So I did all my homework during lunch or off period. They could have a greater workload, but they could also just use poor time management.
I also didn't have the internet until my last years of high school. That could've been a game changer for me

Kid is beating off in his room and claiming he's always busy with homework. Next..

I played basketball, football, and ran track in high school. Think I averaged about 2 hours per month of homework by the time I was a senior. I was generally awake about 50% of the time in class, maybe less. One teacher actually said the class could have a free day at the end of the month to watch a movie in clads if they could keep me awake the entire month. That was funny. I think they managed to keep me awake 2 days.

I've always assumed you shared alot in common with Jared from subway and I assume your wife and brotherinlaw are about the same age.

That's a pretty retarded assumption. Not surprising coming from you though.

Only 2-3 hours, must be easy school and non-AP courses. My daughter used to have no less than 4 or 5 hours most days and plenty of reading and work on the weekend. All classes from Soph year on were AP or honors and she maintained a 4.0 playing two sports. She did great managing her time. Now my son, that 's another story :)

Obviously it's the same for most adults.
I graduated high school in 2011. I'm not that far out of school, and I don't think it has changed much.
I definitely wasn't the brightest kid in high school, and didn't put near as much effort as I should have into my studies back then, and I still managed to graduate with a decent GPA while playing football.
If you preach the importance of paying attention in class, and taking good notes, it will cut down on the time spent on homework/studying outside of school a good bit. Something I learned the hard way once I got into college.
Also, we rarely practiced passed 5:30 in high school, so even if it was 2-3 hours of homework, that shouldn't be hard getting to bed before 10.

Their kids may just be stupid.

As a middle school teacher, the thought of having to grade that much HW makes me shudder and cry

Most of our homework was not graded. It was just checked to see if we did it or not.

Some of yal are dumb as frick or school must have gotten hard as hell. I went to a top notch high school and no chance I'm spending 3 hours a night on homework.
As some said, that's what the bus and the free period is for.

Kid is really dumb or they are lying. My oldest is in 5th grade.. Usually finishes or close to all written work in study hall before football.. 30-40 min. Sometimes he has a little more and he studies for tests when he gets home but not every night.

What experiences are yall having this year? Is it harder for a kid to play a school sport these days?
Make sure your kid dates a smarter person so they can help with the homework....problem solved

Both of my daughters (1 high school 1 Middle School They each have about four hours of practices every night) have played school ball and AAU at the same time and still managed their homework. They usually have half their homework done by the time they get home from school.
