VENETIE, Alaska (FOX) — A 5-year-old child in a remote Alaskan village carried a toddler a half-mile to a neighbor’s house in bitter sub-zero temperatures after they were left home alone, police said Friday. The older child was frightened after the power went out at the home, so wearing only socks and light clothing, he picked up the younger child and started walking through temperatures that dipped 31 degrees below zero in the village of Venetie, Alaska, according to state troopers. Both children suffered cold-weather injuries, according to an Alaska Department of Safety news release. Julie Peter, 37, left the 5-year-old and 18-month-old home alone and has been arrested on suspicion of endangering a minor, authorities said. Her relationship to the children was not immediately known. Once the children reached another home, the residents there called authorities and troopers arrived on Tuesday to check on the children in the village of 175 people. Like other interior Alaska communities during late autumn, Venetie — located 155 miles north of Fairbanks — regularly reaches 40 degrees below zero or lower. The troopers chartered an airplane to reach the village. It’s unclear how long the children had been on their own; all authorities could say is that the older child decided to leave the house because he was scared when the home lost power, troopers said. That poor child must have been terrified.

In socks and light clothing at -31 degrees? It is a miracle he made it. This could have ended bad...real bad.

They need to hang that bitch that left them out in the cold.

Dang, that's a tough kid. I start whining like a little bitch when it hits 40°F.

Wow. That is a tough walk and carry in that kind of cold.

I wonder where the chick went. On a village of 175 people she couldn’t have gone too far.

Sad when a child is a better parent than the parents. Even a 5 year old knew you don't leave a baby alone.

I have a 5 year old that can exhibit some severe separation anxiety. I’m confident he’d walk 2 walk in the same weather if left alone. However, I’m not so sure he’d carry his little brother with him.

The old myth "it takes a village"

Pretty common in the native villages for this to happen. N truth, no one is watching the kids

Part of me wants to applaud the kid. But at the same time this kid probably has some damn good survival skills for cold weather given where they live. At 5 he should have known better then to go outside with just socks on and no jacket. Do they also not have a home phone? Do they have cell phones up there? I mean due to the location do they have a cell tower just for that village?

That little dude is a beast.

5 years old, picks baby sibling up, walks a decent distance in freezing weather in light clothing and only socks.

That little guy is tough.

I watch that show "Alaska State Troopers" and life up in those villages is pretty awful. They usually have a resource officer that keeps track of things. But other than that, it's kind of lawless.

I'm pretty sure it's all cell phones. Maybe hand radios as well..

You gotta figure this tough little fricker has probably been left alone before and has been getting survival training since he could walk. Any villiage it takes 3 days for a cop to show up has to be constantly surviving. This probably was a normal occurrence for him. Not agreeing with the a-hole adult leaving the children alone but i bet it wasn't the first time.

Cellphones? I doubt they have any towers and as you can tell electricity is spotty at best.
