My credit is good so I get my own financing which speeds up the process and save a little.
Due to work purposes I typically replace my vehicles every 2 to 2.5 years.
Pretty much not married to a brand, but price for equal options.
Shop around 3 GMC, 3 Ford, 3 Dodge Ram, and 3 Chevy dealers.
When I go in
1. Tell sales manager I have my own financing
2. Ready to buy today which is true if deal fair
3. Ask them about their extra charges because some like to charge for vehicle etching $499 or coupon book. If they put it in the price I tell them thank you and I leave.
Their time is valuable and my time valuable bottom line.
I hate where when they leave they start cutting the price. I believe you want my business give me the best price upfront or I will give the next person a shot.

And yet, they're trying to prevent car makers from NOT having dealerships...

I'm about to leave a Ford dealership after looking at/ testing a Mustang to replace my Audi TT...
Me - "Well, I'm going to check out some other vehicles too. I've got a list of cars I need to look at before I set my mind."
Salesperson - "You can't afford the payments, huh? I could tell."
Me - "What the hell?"
Pissed me off right then and there. Left the dealership with some burnt rubber. Classic pushy, douche-y, too-much-cologne salesperson firebombed his chances with an ignorant statement. I put up with all his desperate nagging and stink, but that statement put me off from the Ford brand. Actually went total 180 and got an appliance car, Prius, since I don't really drive too much anymore plus I saved money for some other toys.

I buy my cars online and have them shipped directly to my house like any other purchase.
Oh wait. Nevermind. That would make too much sense.

Seriously, how do you expect them to stay in business if they do this?

I've had several bad experiences. I used to be ignored by salespeople and I would have to ask for assistance. Once in the middle of a weekday day a group of them were in the parking lot shooting the shite but no one came to help me even thought I was the only one there. So I go to ask for some help and they all bust out laughing and look at one of the guys like he's drawn the short straw and he starts to help me. I was so embarrassed as he disinterstedly - if that's a word - "helped" me. I left pretty quickly.
Another time was when I went back to a dealership where I had previously a great experience. But the white owners were gone and the new owners were Arab. That may not be pertinent but they were absolutely trying to screw me on the price and kept reneging so I got upset and walked out making a minor scene.

Was working with the bossman one day and we got caught in a rain, by the time we got to a stopping point we we filthy. We go to the local Chevy dealer in the town where we were working so he can buy the crew cab work truck they have out front. When he asks about the truck, the salesman says "you know man, those trucks are expensive."

My brother almost got into a physical altercation with the finance manager of a dealership a while back.
I guess the finance manager told him that they don't make El Caminos anymore.

Don't lease, ever.
Don't finance more than 48 months, ever.
Negotiate via email, have OTD price locked down.
Tell them if the car isn't ready when you get there, at the agreed on price, you'll leave. Then do so, if you have to.
If the F&I man tries to change the price (and he sure as shite will), decline.
That's what I've learned in buying new cars for the past 30 years.
Good luck.

F&i guys' job is to sell warranty, gap, h&a, etching,etc....
internet is a good way but I've noticed most "Internet mgr" are douches.
Sometimes it is worth face to face.
I deal with it everyday.... customers think they know everything this that...
domestics marked up.6-10k,imports 1-3k. Plain and simple

I wasted an entire day at Dean McCreary in Mobile. It was a horrible experience. They actually changed the price after the fact because they realized I drove from Baton Rouge. They even said "you're not going going to kill this deal after driving all the way from Baton Rouge."I put a $10K deposit on the car, and needed to reverse it two hours later.

"What constitutes getting screwed? How much profit does a dealer have to make for you to consider getting screwed? A thousand? Two thousand?"
Most new car dealerships no longer make nearly as much on new car sales as they do on used car sales and repair work from their shop. New vehicles are a commodity: a brand new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo has a known exact same value at any Jeep dealer, from a consumer's standpoint. It s value is easily discerned using the interwebz. A used 2010 Vehicle is unique as to its wear and tear, care and mechanical history, hence the value is much more subjective. There are certainly generalizations that can be made as to a used car's value, but new car dealers buy used cars at discounted rates at auction or take them in as trades and end up realizing much more profit from their eventual sales than new cars.
Answering specifically your question, getting screwed on a new car purchase is paying much more than the average market rate paid for the exact same vehicle. On pedestrian new Chevrolet pickups, Chevy dealers make as little as $200-$400 per new unit and have to live with that. If a individual customer ends up paying $1,000 profit to a dealer for a new Chevy truck, the purchaser definitely got beat up on that deal. If you are poor, the $600 to $800 is a lot of money. Is that screwed? Not to me, but paying $2,000 too much for that vehicle is. As different brands and models may have differing margins and "screwed" thresholds, paying $1,000 or $2,000 over the best deal for say a Porsche Cayenne may not be getting screwed. There are fewer deals per week written and the vehicle is more expensive and there are fewer dealers.

I had a guy in Jackson lock me down on a price for my Tahoe and my truck. We had been emailing each other the entire week. I sent him pictures of both, got service history of both to him etc, so we settled on $29k for both.
So I tow the Tahoe up to Jackson from New Orleans one day, and immediately go jump in their truck and test drive it. Everything was good, loved the truck. I got him down to a price I was comfortable paying through email, which we both agreed upon.
Go back into his building and start talking. I say, "So, we ready to do this deal?" He said,"Well.....not exactly. I'm not at the same price I was earlier in the week. I am a little lower than that". I said,"Wtf dude, we agreed on a price. That's why I drove the frick up here". He came back and offered me $16k for both vehicles. I said, "Are you fricking shitting me?"
He was not. I was fed up and ready to make the trip back down to New Orleans, but I needed to take a leak before the trip. Went into his bathroom and pissed all over the entire toilet and in the sink.
He'd also asked me if I wanted some coffee when I first got there. After I got done pissing everywhere, I said,"Can I get that cup of coffee now"? Filled that sum bitch up and poured it on the ground right in front of him and walked out like a fricking boss(not technically because I was the idiot who had to drive back), but metaphorically
*Had a completely opposite experience with an internet sales company in San Antonio. Agreed on both prices. Drove down with a check. Drove their truck for 20 minutes. Came back and signed some paperwork and was out with a new truck within an hour of me first showing up

I can't say that I have been screwed over by a dealership. Some deals I have made have been better than others but none that I regretted later. I am different than alot of people though. I do a ton of homework, and know what I will pay before I ever walk in there. Will not pay a dime over that price either. Always be willing to walk out.
