That is not true at all. Vehicles are insured not people. Former adjuster here.
100% true.
Vehicles are insured not people, right. And when one is withdrawn from use and a temp sub is obtained in the example I gave, coverage of the withdrawn vehicle becomes primary on the sub.
That’s the why in LA you don’t have to choose the coverage the rental car company provides because your personal auto policy will transfer over if the rental is replacing yours while it’s under repair.
Thats still talking about the one example I used.
OPs daughter who is a listed driver on his policy is different than “letting your kid use it occasionally.” Insurance companies catch on to this and some have started making you list all licensed members of the household whether they have their own designated car or not.
He’s also gotten bad advice about not listing his kid until the insurance company finds out. It’s not detrimental to life but it could be enough to get you dropped as an insured or have coverage excluded in the event of an accident.
ETA There are a million different situations regarding coverage but I was specifically answering the OPs question about letting “his kid use it occasionally” to avoid being listed. Telling him it’s not some temp sub situation, she’s a member of the household and should be a listed driver so he’s going to have to bite the bullet and get her listed.
I was also an adjuster for 15 years in Louisiana and I still work for an insurance company.

If you have a license but no car, can you even get insurance to cover yourself (in LA)?
Say you have 3 cars but 4 drivers in your household. How does that fourth person get insured?

Seems to me that the car is insured not the driver. Don't know that a driver can file an insurance claim on a car he/she does not own.

The cars are insured not the driver.
All licensed drivers are supposed to be known to the insurance company. Age and sex of drivers influence the amount the policyholder pays

If a licensed driver is in your house they will tell you they must be on the policy. But obviously some folks just choose not to do that and it works out for them.
Also they rate you by the worst drivers. For example we have 2 teens listed and 3 cars insured. It was cheaper for us to bring my truck to state farm to get the multipolicy discount with homeowners AND keep liability only on the truck with the other 2 cars. If I completely cancelled my truck they would price us having two teens driving the remaining 2 cars by $500/yr.
Yea you did math good…remove coverage of a whole vehicle and they wanted to INCREASE the policy.
So my old truck has full coverage with state farm and liability with progressive.
What a time to be alive in Louisiana

You are responsible for the acts of your minor child. Raise your liability limits. Get an umbrella policy.

My dad did this.
Then when I was 20ish, he put a car in my name and paid for a separate policy for me reducing his liability.

What did you do to have to provide proof?
Talk to your Agent. Typically, they need proof (letter) of taking drivers ed and another letter/transcript of grades for discounts. If she's not driving much some offer a discount based on driving miles. This requires some sort of monitoring system either an app or a FOB that goes in the car.

Yep just switched to progressive with 2 teenage sons and 4 vehicles… I carry highest limits and I was shocked that it wasn’t unreasonable. As far as I know they don’t list anything as primary- just the drivers and the vehicles

This is our current situation. They just list drivers and vehicles. None are assigned. We had safeco now switching to progressive and we are adding a 4th vehicle. I was shocked it actually went down adding 4th vehicle. Get a broker and shop quotes from different agencies

keep in mind that this is going to guarantee that your child pays the highest rate possible when they get their own insurance later on. when it shows they have never been listed on any insurance.

Yep. So very important if you can afford it. Lost policies max out at $500k.
That’s not a lot when you you think about it.

We live in Louisiana, have progressive, added my teen son's car for $100 a month. We paid fully for the car and carry liability only.

USAA also added $100/mo, but he has his own car so the total all-in is $2400. If he was just driving one of our other cars, it would just be $1200.

Wut. Insurance isn't like credit scores

you will get some nominal discounts for Good Student (certificate that comes from her school) and if she takes a Driver's Ed class by a certified provider. She will be less to insure than a boy. (I have two teen boys and a teen daughter).
Yes, be prepared to open a vein.

I have State Farm and don’t trust the agent any further than I can throw him, so I simply don’t ask him any questions bc I don’t trust the answers to be truthful or accurate.
I do have a friend that has a State Farm agency out of state, so I called him to ask about insuring my 16 year old.
He told me not to insure her and just let her drive “my car”.
Dude has his own agency. I believe him.
Anyone that says not to do this is an idiot.
