Meh, kids mouthing words half of which they don't understand is not my idea of how to instill patriotism. Kim Jong-Un probably does something similar.

Others, like myself, would argue that the pledge itself is indoctrination.

Never had a student body-wide morning meeting when I went to school. We said the pledge in class. If they're just shifting to the classroom than no one should really have a problem with it.

bullshite. what "public gathering" recites the pledge of allegiance? Does your girlfriend live in Canada too?
I honestly can't remember the last time I heard the pledge of allegiance. Kids don't pay attention to the meaning of the words, they just recite it from memory.

It was decided decades ago:
"If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein. If there are any circumstances which permit an exception, they do not now occur to us" - Justice Robert Jackson writing in the West Virginia State BoE v. Barnette (1943) decision that students cannot be forced to salute the flag or say the pledge
