Atheist at dinner: "Look, If I'm just a good guy, treat ppl right, then die, I'll be happy

Work dinner. Stay later for a drink. Co-worker's way too chatty friend arrives all of a sudden and doesn't shut up (groan....)
Anyways... talks about being an atheist way too much. I'm barely paying attention at this point but then says....
"Look man, if I just live my life being a solid dude, treating people right, live a good life and die, I'll be happy."
Having said basically nothing since this dude showed up, I was admittedly interested in this comment.
The guy says (a whole lot) that there is no God. Therefore no conscious afterlife right?
Then says he'll be a happy dude if all these things happen.
Ummm. When will he be happy? He'll just be dust. When can he hang around talking about how bitchin' this life was?
Does that make sense? He was talking about how he'll be happy. Somewhere somehow?
I sort of called him out on it. He then ordered some random tequila drink and went outside.

Are you retarded? He's saying he's happy now with the thought of what he said. It's a figure of speech

Doubt he'll enjoy Hell.

I think he means he'll be happy when he's dying because of a life well-lived as opposed to being happy about going to an imaginary place in the sky

That in no way was the point he was making. He was literally saying "I can look back and say job well done". As in after he died. I asked him where he would be looking back from.

People like that aren't as sure of the situation as they lead on to be, hence why they project. In reality they are scared shitless

Men of God use paragraphs, heathen.

YE young debaters over the doctrine
Of the soul’s immortality,
I who lie here was the village atheist,
Talkative, contentious, versed in the arguments
Of the infidels.
But through a long sickness
Coughing myself to death
I read the Upanishads and the poetry of Jesus.
And they lighted a torch of hope and intuition
And desire which the Shadow,
Leading me swiftly through the caverns of darkness,
Could not extinguish.
Listen to me, ye who live in the senses
And think through the senses only:
Immortality is not a gift,
Immortality is an achievement;
And only those who strive mightily
Shall possess it.

He pretty much meant that he will be happy throughout and at the end of his life if all of those things happen. If he treats people well throughout his life and makes good decisions he will generally be happy with his life at most any given moment, even in the waning moments of his life

This.
Also, how did this even come up?

Regardless of your views, you have to respect a guy who is able to live an ethical life without fearing for the afterlife. There are many people (not all) out there who if they found out there is no afterlife, would no longer be "good neighbors"
