So today I meet the technician at our farm house. And he's this cool older black guy with a white beard. Really nice and professional.

But was he well-spoken?

I saw a report on telemarketers a long time ago. This included a CLASS on scamming. One of the key principles is to call old people, b/c they are often lonely since they're children have moved away and seldom call. Also old women are often widows. So they're more willing, even eager to talk with someone.

Another key: "Hello how are you today?"

The reason they begin like that
(instead of getting to the point) is to lengthen the call. Psychologically, the longer you stay on the line you more you are "invested" in the call. So the more likely you are to keep listening to their pitch

I used to cold call to generate sales leads. The old people will definitely stay on the phone with you as long as you are nice and polite and talking to them and being folksy. Think of that scene in Better Call Saul when Francesca is talking on the phone with the old lady and talks about Cracker Barrel. "It's so hot outside, I just want to go to Cracker Barrel for the air conditioning".

I totally understand your anger but if you can view it from both sides what probably happened is… he spoke to a person trained to use one tool that can see just as much as you can by going to att’s website, plugged in his address, and said this is what we offer. Combined with general uncertainty and confusion of speaking with elderly people. Yes, I’ve had a customer service job is the past. I’d wager this wasn’t a devious sales plot and more of a communication error/the guy on the phone has one move- offer what’s available

That said, frick ATT, they have a global fortress of people of like this. I bought a new phone after trying to battle them about unlocking another because it was better for my mental health

They fricked me when upgrading my phone and added a new line. They showed me a new bill price and I signed the tablet and put my account for autopay. Turns out later I get a balance text from ATT and am floored at the amount.

Refused to refund the months of overcharging for multiple hour long calls. Finally canceled the line and will give a bill credit, but then say since the line is canceled , I have to pay the full balance of the phone in two months.

The in person store can’t help with bills but he told us that an entire store in Zachary lost all their future phone sales because they were adding these extra charges behind people back.

frick ATT. They are the biggest pieces of shite and I hope your dad can somehow find that person and shove that hot spot up their arse.

It turns out that AT&T sales people make big commissions on the Hot Spots. So this guy just made up a bald faced lie to sell my dad something he didn't need.

I think he definitely needs a new plumber. What sort of a-hole nicks a line and doesn't say shite??? You might say this was expensive, but finding out the person you trust to do your plumbing sucks is priceless why are you ok with that person fricking your father over?

This may go against the norm here but I would find the email of the CEO of AT&T and send him the story. And ask, ASK him to call you back within a week or you will copy the ATT PR people and then the media. I got a call from the CEO of a fortune 500 company because the small business didn't get paid in 30 days for a PO that I wrote. It was probably a thousandth of a second of spend at the F500 company but the biggest job the small business did that month.

AT&T tries to scam everyone.

They once sold me buy one/get one phones that, as it turned out, weren't part of the BOGO promotion. I was not aware that was the case, as the salesman was the one who told me the phones were on the promotion. Long story short, they accused me of stealing the phones, were incapable of fixing their frickup, and I paid full price for both phones.

That's just one personal example of their incredible incompetence and general sliminess.

frick AT&T.

The cut line by the water company was over a mile away. Had nothing to do with us. Settle down, Francis.

ATT are a bunch of crooks. I’ve had some dealings with them regarding accounts of family members that have passed away and they are shysters. If your state’s attorney general has a consumer protection complaint office, your Dad should file a complaint.

AT&T has 13 lobbyists in Louisiana alone. It’s on the La ethics website. The first week of the legislative session AT&T throws a big party for the entire legislature. It’s in the lobbying filings. All they gotta do is put on a $2,500 crab boil and they can screw whoever they want.

ATT was the catalyst for Mr cutting the cord with Directv. As soon as they purchased them I began to see a decline in customer service.
