I'd be okay with 15 but 18 seems reasonable.

I only say that bc SUPPOSEDLY evidence shows the average brain doesn't stop maturing until 21 or 22. I think that's a fair age to set the drinking age considering alcohol has both short and long term effects on the brain.

I'm kinda leaning towards this mind set

16 with parental supervision
18 to drink can't buy it
21 to buy it
as soon as you join the military for service.

19 for beer, 21 for liquor. Reason for 19 beer and not 18 is we can't have 18 year olds who are still in highschool buying beer. It is a small compromise and allows college students and most military to start at 19.

This is what the law really should be. Instead we have the MADD prohibitionists running around.

19 I don't like the idea of high school seniors being able to drink legally. Let them wait until they are in college.

Then start a campaign and push to make it that way!

You do realize it was the elected representatives of the citizenry that made it 21? It wasn't sent down by some decree.

If you people have a problem with the drinking age, write your congressman.

18 is too young for the majority, coming from someone who lost a family member to some drunken idiot. Can't have HS kids running around with more opportunities.

Military - drink
I don't see the problem with the general 21 age limit though.

At the age I'm legal to serve my country I should also be legal to have a beer.

Believe it or not it's not up to congress, but the state legislature. They did a quid pro quo with the fed gov by raising the drinking age to 21 in exchange for more highway funds. With the highway funds drying up it may be time to reexamine the issue. Now we have the highest drinking age in the world, while still having significant drunk driving deaths.

I think it comes down to availability of mass transit honestly. You could lower the limit in NYC and have a minimal rise in drunk driving fatalities. Why? Everyone uses the subway, and they don't drive it.
