Ascension Parish Schools are laying off some teachers

I know a couple teachers and other employees of the APSB and have heard from each of them that some teachers and other personnel are being let go at the end of this school year in May. They're not being told specifics but suspect it's due to budget cuts. Anyone know the real story here? They're building a few new schools right now so I wonder if that's where all the funds are going to.

..well, they're going to get laid one way or another.
But for real, good luck to them and anyone who loses their job.

Very, very far from the truth. A friend's wife is one of them and she just found out she doesn't have a job at the end of May. They're in their 20's, just got married a couple years ago, and just had a baby.

AP is opening two new primary schools this fall and another middle school in 2020. They aren't laying off teachers due to budget cuts. Maybe the people you know just suck at their job and are getting fired. I teach in AP and we have a teacher at our school who didn't get her contract renewed because she sucks.

Then they are trimming the fat before tenure.

This happens every year to the shitty teachers. I'm talking about legitimate layoffs and they're being tight-lipped about the precise reasons. That's why I'm here, to see if anyone is in the know and can anonymously provide info.

I can promise they aren’t laying off any teachers that are good at their job. I believe they are actually working on raises. With the new schools they are going to be hiring teachers and asking teachers to transfer to the new schools. Without knowing the whole story, my guess would be that these teacher just may not be good at their job. I know a twin oaks in ebr will be looking to hire. Maybe have them send resume there.

Usually construction of new schools is funded through some type of property tax bonds and does not reflect the operating budget. Here in Lafourche parish we have had massive budget cuts the past few years including a RIF two years in a row,but we are still building new schools and renovating others. The district cannot use the voter approved construction bond money for any other purpose.
What many people do not understand is that the state has slowly, over the past 10 years or so, reduced their share of school funding. 10 years ago state funding for school districts was around 70% of the load with local taxes and funds covering the rest. Now it is reversed with only around 30% of funding coming from the state and 70% coming from local taxes/funds.
THis reduction along with new unfunded mandates have caused financial problems for many districts in the state so it would not surprise me at all if there are other districts dealing with cuts and RIFs.

WBR Schools pays higher than most surrounding districts. The jobs suck and admin sucks. It if you get laid off in AP, they have a job fair Thursday. Openings everywhere. Problem solved.

Every year they decline to renew the contracts of underperforming teachers
AP has a dedicated millage for teacher salaries. There has been no changes to the status of that millage and I believe it must be used to fund salaries.

Which is odd since the hiring fair they do is coming up

We're they fired, or just assigned another school in the Parish. Huge difference

Each year, APSB culls the herd making room for fresh and hopefully better blood

Most parishes cannot "fire" a teacher who has good performance scores. Of these teachers are getting fired it means they've underperformed on their SLT's. If they've performed then they would get moved
