knew a guy that was awarded the cmh in '69 for his actions in '68, even had a ship named after him in '96, never saw anything after '68 unfortunately

I was in that battle when I was a young Lance Corporal in the Marines. I’m just finishing up my guard AT right now and I have guys in my platoon that we’re born after I joined the military.

The guy has really aged. He looks A lot older than 43.
I can't find the video now, but there's an interview talking about what happened. He slipped in a pool of blood just as the other guy fired, otherwise he would be dead. Then, after he stabbed him, the other guy reached out and touched his face. He said he thinks about it every day, trying to figure out the meaning of that.
MoH's have been awarded at a much lower rate than in past conflicts, moreso for Iraq than Afghanistan. They have usually been posthumous, and usually had a sacrificial component-diving on a grenade, rescuing a wounded comrade, etc. This is one, strictly for close combat, is an extreme rarity for this era.
The much maligned Obama started a review process that has continued under Trump. The round that resulted in this award also led to 16 other upgrades to the Distinguished Service Cross.
