Are you supposed to put regular drywall on the ceiling above a shower/tub?

That's what it had before but I didn't know if I should be putting green board up there during a remodel and what painting considerations should be made.

I'm doing some google-fu and am seeing answers all over the map.

TIA!

edit: I'm talking about the ceiling.

I would put the green rock since it wont cost much more but regular would be fine unless it is getting wet

I think he is talking about the ceiling.

I personally used greenboard for the ENTIRE bathrooms in houses I have had built.

Tile on the ceiling would look odd in that bathroom, imo.

Just hire someone

If you can’t afford it start a gofundme claiming you have some terminal disease and people will donate and you have a new bathroom.

Greenboard it all if it’s going around a shower.

the green board is just sheetrock with mold resistant paper so use the green board.

for side walls use duraboard (cement board) all the way up to the ceiling or to whatever point you are tiling over it, use green board on any surface in kitchen or bath near water or moisture if your just painting over it.

if the shower stall is an enclosed moisture trap (not ope to let the steam out on top) then i would put duraboard (cement board) on the ceiling and tile over it

Doesn't matter if shower is not enclosed, for example 6' shower on 8' ceiling. If its enclosed at a minimum use green board on ceiling with tile over it. I would not totally enclose a shower unless the ceiling was a non absorbant surface such as tile or fiberglass. Ideally put cement board or lath & mortar behind tile.

No they’re not the same... been selling construction material for 30yrs and have bought both green and purple from the same manufacturer ...

The colors are different so you’ll know which is just moisture resistant and which is mold mildew and moisture resistant

How do you feel about rock seams being right where the recessed light cans are? Bad idea?

The price difference isn't that much. I went with all green board in the bathroom.
But no the ceiling can be regular.
