I believe SundayFunday has said he works in organ procurement, not sure if LOPA. But my girlfriend does. (No pics)
She used to work in the OR and when she took the LOPA job she almost had a breakdown her 2nd month in and wanted to quit. She explained it to me as going from saving someone, or making their life better, to EVERY patient dead on the table when she leaves. Quit the contrast. It took going to a picnic event of where doner's families and recipients meet to realize the saving of ones life is just the next step after her job is done. She loves her work now.
You have no idea, NO IDEA, the rejection rate for those even on the list. But nurse is pretty spot on with her posts. This is a copy and paste from my 1st post on TD the last time this subject was talked about:
quote:
For everyone who says they are a donor, make sure your family, specifically your legal next of kin knows your wishes. Your family is still approached upon your passing for consent to donate. If they say no, you don't donate.
Also, if you're brain dead and NOT listed as a donor, your family may be approached as well for donation. They need all they can get offered.
I don't think people realize what goes in to all the work, time, and money organ procurement goes through to get "good" organs. There have been instances where harvest teams fly out of NOLA to meet in Shreveport with the surgeon flying in from New York only to have him nix every organ as not good enough. All fly back empty handed. Quite sad really.
As far as the "they won't save you if your a donor" mindset is nonsense. If you're not already on life support when you go brain dead, your organs have a minimal chance of being used anyway.

I don't work in the Peds ICU but sometimes I get floated there. A few times I have been back there when a child that has been declared brain dead has been ok'd for organ donation by the family. There is an ICU nurse assigned to care for just that child on top of a nurse from the organ procurement agency. It seemed like both of them were very busy the entire shift. Constant labwork to make sure certain levels were ok, readjusting medication drips, etc. All of this to keep the organs viable enough for harvesting and donation. Like you said...soo much has to fall in place just right for a successful harvest/donation. That's why organ agencies have to be notified of every death in the hospital. Just on the off chance that the person could be a candidate for organ donation. With sooooo many people in need of organs now, can you blame them for wanting to be thorough and approaching family of patients that actually are candidates for donation?
For those that object to donation....imagine a loved one of yours is on the donor list for an organ. Wouldn't you want to know these agencies are doing everything they can to find the life saving organs for your loved one?

I signed up and my license says "organ donor," but I haven't donated anything yet.

I'm not an organ donor. Why should doctors and hopitals make millions off of me and my family gets nothing? Besides, too many people on this planet already.
