It wouldn't hold zero and fogged up on me. Nikon $300 scope

Nikon hasnt made scopes in years. Sounds like you were using old technology.

I was using cheap scopes 10 years ago. The cheapest scope I have is 100 dollar Walmart Burris on a Tikka 243. It's junk. I know it. I'll get something better for it.

Sounds like bad consumerism, do more research before buying.

Things have changed in 10 years, like leaps and bounds.

I did, which is why for my custom rifles I didn't buy Chinese junk scopes.

I dont either. I buy good Chinese/Philippines mfgd scopes and save the money you would have spent on ammo.

I don't buy ammo. I make my own.

No, you assemble your own. You still buy the components.

Majority of time I choose best quality. It's worked well for me.

Depends on what it is. I will buy a cheap toaster but want a quality car.

Depends on price differential, quality differential and possible changes upcoming in the space

For instance, I don’t mind running through 2 of something at half the price if in 5 years the cheap item is better than the aged expensive one (say a tv for example)

A belt that’ll last a lifetime vs one that’ll fall apart in 6 months is a spot I’ll get the quality one
