The wife had a Passat.. we loved that car. One day the check engine light came on . Took it to the the dealership. They got it to turn off. On the way home it came on again. Four more dealership trips to get it off and they gave up. Straight up told me they don’t know what’s wrong and can’t fix it. Referred me to a private owned shop. He never got it off either. Traded it in with the light on. Never again on European cars unless I hit the powerball .

The entry model Golf was a decent value. But they canceled that one.

My family has been taking our Hondas/Acuras (and originally a Beetle) to a particular mechanic for 50 years (3rd generation now working there). They only work on Honda/Acura/VW/Audi. The grandfather that started the shop emigrated from Germany.

When car shopping we mentioned to them we were looking at Audi. Their comment- “If you want to keep your money, buy a Honda or Acura. If you want to give me your money, buy a VW or Audi.”

Classic German car problems.

Very pretty and when they're at 100% they're great machines.

However, they are over-engineered and use unreliable plastic and rubber parts all over that wear out. I know more about the BMW/Audi stuff, but you don't want to buy one of those after 45-55k miles. I've heard VW is similar (I think Audi and VW are like Kia and Hyundai these days).

WHEN you have problems, the mechanic fees will be insane because of the over-engineering. Nothing is simple to get to in a German car so it takes FOREVER to do somewhat routine things that take like 1 trip with a comparable Honda/Toyota (who go out of their way to make access most routine things super easy).

VW has a long history of electrical issues.

Forgot about that in my post.

Germans are only ahead of the British when it comes to shitty electrical work in cars.

But she can't feel proud telling her wine club that she drives a Mazda.

Buy a VW and you will get to know your mechanic really well.

Like invite him to family dinners at your house well.

German cars are for people that can afford to continue leasing a new one under full warranty.
My wife has a 2018 BMW 540i, purchased off lease with under 19k miles. Almost 2 years later land she's only added another 4300 miles.

Should I be worried?

What's the boards opinion on VW? Any actual first hand experience?

My wife is on her 3rd one, all Beetles. It is a 2019 Beetle convertible turbo, it's fun to drive with considerable torque and sticks to the road like glue, her sound system also blows away my Pilot's. Her first one was a turbo Beetle back when VW got caught for emissions issues, it had a little turbo lag but would haul arse when it spooled up. The only issue we had was with the first one with fuel injectors going bad ~ 40k miles but my 2017 Pilot's injectors went out just over warranty limit at 37k miles and Honda wouldn't cover it. If you keep the VW maintained I think your wife could get 50k pretty easy with no issues, I don't think they are drive until the wheels fall off type vehicles for reasons mentioned up-thread.

Don't you have to use Torx wrenches or Allen wrenches or something on the lug nuts? And aren't they actually bolts, not nuts?

I mean, what in the actual ever-living frick... those are the 20+ nuts (sorry, bolts) your wife might actually have to put a wrench to, and VW can't supply a normal 6-point lug? That's beyond stupid.

The Fender sound system is pretty awesome. It’s the reason we went with the 2018 SEL Premium over a similar 2019 SEL. My wife hates it when I pump the bass up when 90’s rap comes on
