Are there 40 days or 46 days in Lent?

Apparently, from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday, there are 46 days. But you don't count the 6 Sundays in Lent because they are days of rest. You ain't suppose to fast on Sundays. So feel free to eat meat on Sundays. You won't be breaking any rules.

The point is you don't have to fast on Sundays during Lent. You can do that thing you are giving up during Lent.

Catholic math says it's 40 days no matter what. Because that's how long Jesus spent fasting and being tempted in the wilderness.

its supposed to be renunciation.
actually go on a fast for a few days.
Friday is not enough to matter.
clean up some. purify. inside. prayer and fasting.

I know one thing: some time during Lent I will forget on a Friday and eat meat not realizing until after I ate.

That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works.

Ding ding ding. Lent is about true sacrifice, but 99% of observers treat it more like a petty inconvenience.
Dear child, you are going to go a full 40 days without Coke? Bless you.
And don't even get me started on the no meat crap. Originally it was the entire period because it was believed the more protein you consumed, the more lustful you would be. So no meat (unless you demonstrated your piety with a cash donation to the church) for the duration. Not sure how it condensed to only on Fridays.
Just go ahead and truly fast, and think of the silver lining of the upcoming swim season.

If you're looking for a way out of it then you're probably doing it for the wrong reason anyway, and God looks at the heart, not the deed. The book says so.

You made it subtle so I would fall into your trap.

For Catholics Lent ends at sundown on Holy Thursday.
True, but...
quote:
"The 40 days of Lent" has always been more of a metaphor than a literal count. Over the course of history the season of preparation for Easter Sunday has ranged from one day (in the first century) to 44 (today in the Roman church). Officially since 1970, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sunset on Holy Thursday.
quote:
So today, while the season of Lent (Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday) is technically 44 days, the number of days for penance and fasting before Easter is still 40: 44 days minus 6 Sundays equals 38, plus Good Friday and Holy Saturday equals 40.

Does a colonic/enema count

The song says..."These forty days of lent O' Lord to you we fast and pray..." as I remember from my parochial school days.

The Orthodox do. They don't get Sundays off either.
