I lived fairly close to Klieberts growing up and I can’t recollect if I ever went. If I did, it would explain my childhood reoccurring alligator nightmares.

And for Rest areas. I haven’t stop at one for years

what was that sketchy snake and reptile place in LaPlace? I can't believe they were able to keep anything caged up

AFAIK, the only service areas that are full service in the median in FL are on the Turnpike.

This is to simplify ingress and egress without having to mess with the tolls.

As soon as a private entity takes over a rest area, I am pretty sure it will soon become a truck plaza with all the headaches associated with that and lose the simple convenience of a rest area.

If the contract language restricted that activity, who would bid?

What would truck drivers do. There isn't enough parking for them already. Thyy already lined up on the exit ramps.
Go take a look at Interstate 22 and Interstates 81 and 77 after interstate 40 closed from Helene. Every ramp - every single ramp is packed with trucks. The rest areas are slammed, and every truck stop piled in like sardines. It's insane.

Many of the old fashioned ones are still one of the highlights of a road trip.

Louisiana welcome center at the Mississippi line. Retired ladies give you a community coffee and give you info on Swamp Tours and French Quarter Hotel offers in that swampy park setting.

Pennsylvania Welcome center at the Jersey state line where very similar retired ladies in park ranger shirts give you a watery Dutch hot chocolate and those old fashioned tourist maps with cartoons.

Getting your photo with a life sized -- not that realistic -- guitar playing Elvis statue in Mississippi.

The 17th Century Barn rest area on I-91 in Vermont with a central fireplace and huge window looking on the mountains with local folk art and weird animal sculptures.

I wish states would actually spend more to make/keep up more of these that make driving through a state enjoyable.
This is the stuff that makes America cool.

In Mississippi, there is a security guard on duty at most or all of them. They all have that cute little white shack.

He wants to close the ones in Vicksburg at the river, Natchez/Adams County, and where Hwy 49 meets US 61, the Robert Johnson crossroads. Oh, and the one in Woodville. Says it costs $150 grand apiece to operate per year.

The state could save more than that by eliminating the State Auditor
