I don't know how those businesses/transactions work so I'll just not comment on this yet remain skeptical of your statement.

Using interpersonal relationships to your advantage to sell useless products is trashy.
It's a form of welfare. Why should I support your desire for extra cash to buy a boat?

I know a girl that was all wrapped up in Rodan&Fields for a while. The crazy thing is she makes bank in pharmaceutical sales. I don't know why she even got involved.

I have a family member and a few friends that sell this shite. I've had to unfriend them on facebook because of the constant bombardment of posts about it. And they have the nerve to get upset when they ask me why I gave them the hammer.

I don't mind people doing extra to get ahead.
I do mind if/when I've already told you multiple times that what you're hawking isn't for me, but you keep trying. If other friends are supporting you, wonderful. Just respect me enough to leave me out of it if you've gotten no for an answer already and don't base our interactions around selling me something.

quote:What kind of salesmen do you know that are trying to sell shite to friends and family, but aren't MLM types? I mean maybe a car salesman or something, but most salesmen have nothing that their friends/family could ever want or afford. A salesman isn't going to try to sell a $5 million linear accelerator to his sister, or $1 million in corrugated packaging to his uncle, or lab equipment to his mom.
Lol yes they do.

And MLM means "multi-level marketing" which is a euphemism for pyramid scheme. Oh excuse me, I mean "wealth triangle."

The worst part of MLM is the way they hook people. It's very cult-like for a reason. They dont make money by selling products, they make money by indoctrinating people and then sending them out to indoctrinate more people. So now you're dealing with a bunch of clowns who are trying to sell you tchotchkes, while also selling you on their cult.

It's very common for salesman to use family and friends to find clients.
I get referrals from childhood friends, friends from college, old work friends. Why is it any different than me saying, "Hey, I practice law. If you or anybody you know need a good lawyer, give me a call"?
I think your hatred for the flavor-of-the-month "MLM" product just skews your perspective about how business works.

I had some friends that got indoctrinated to sell Rainbow vacuums a few years ago. They tried convincing me that I would make unbelievable money if I got involved with their company. I don't drink Kool-Aid.

quote:Of course everyone uses their network, but this is a far cry from how MLM marketing works. With MLM, people literally try to sell directly to their closest friends/family. They aren't using friends/family to make connections, they're actually marketing to them and trying to recruit them into the MLM scheme.

MLM is fundamentally different from conventional sales models. Being successful in MLM requires you to recruit people to join the MLM sales program. It's a pyramid scheme.
A real salesman does not try to recruit people to become sellers. He sells his product and earns a living from the commission.
edit: I think it's interesting that you just claimed not to know how MLM works, yet you're accusing me of bias. That seems very disingenuous to me.

Ah, I see what you're saying. Still, not every MLM is a pyramid scheme. Sounds like very fertile ground for it, though.

Well, a true pyramid scheme has no true investment, only the participation of recruits. The payments aren't for a particular service, product, or whatever. It only has a promise and that promise can only be fulfilled by getting more people to participate in the scheme. They fail because eventually the scheme becomes impossible to manage.
The MLM's you speak of have an actual product, and they sell that product to the general public. That pretty much makes it NOT a pyramid scheme.
