Are parental instincts hard wired into you?

I don't have kids, and have never really thought of myself as a "baby friendly" person. My S/O does have a niece, so that's the closest I am to a child.
I was carrying her down the stairs on Saturday and slipped on the last step. Without hesitation, I lifted her up over my head and landed hard on my ribs. After I handed her off, and making sure she was okay, I realized I had a broken rib.
In any other situation, my brain would have made me drop whatever I was holding, and make my arms take the hit. Why is it different when you're holding a child if you don't have any?

No. Although women would claim otherwise

I would do anything automatically to save my children.
However, there's a lot of stuff I had to learn the hard way.
For instance, when changing my sons diaper, use the old one to keep him semi covered in case he still has to go.

Right now it hurts to breathe, can't imagine how it'll feel blowing a wad.

No. I know a couple that claims they use free range parenting technique. This is code for they don't watch their kids for shite, and just let them run wild.

I think immediate safety concerns for children are hardwired into all of us.
Now, the parental aspects of discipline and patience? Nothing hard wired about those at all.

They were into me. I didn't realize I even had them until that nurse handed her over to me.

I'm not really talking about parenting techniques. I'm not one, so have no dog in that fight, yet. More along the lines of "taking a bullet" per say. I understand you protect your kids at all costs, but do you do the same for someone else's?
In that split second, my brain said, "to hell with you, save this thing." If I were carrying a glass vase, you better believe I'd be sweeping up glass and not be having trouble sitting up right now.

I would say for most people with children, yes. Not everyone though. Everyone is wired differently.

For what you are talking about, yes

I'm just reading this thread to see how someone turns it political. This should be interesting.

Liberals shouldn't be parents.

Baby boomers dropped their millennial children on the stairs as they were falling. That's why we suck.

agreed. Their kids really have no chance.
When liberals make babies, you get that cupcake cowboy trying to burn the American flag in public.

I'm pretty sure coming down the steps you were thinking about the kid first before you (like let me not drop this kid or fall with this kid) so you were already ready because you were thinking about it. That's normal. You did right.

True, they won't stand a chance when they have to compete for jobs against the hard core right wing Raptor worshippers.

If they do as you have written, they suck, are rude, and their kids are out of control. Children do not naturally know limitations...Put a chocolate cake in front of a 4th grader and tell him to eat what he wants...
Now, what was the OP?
