Are modern refrigerator's air filters a gimmick?

I'm always annoyed having to change these things as it seems like residual income for the manufacturer.
Anyone ever said "F it" and just stopped changing them? What happened? Fridge start to stink? Fridge exploded one day? Wife ends up leaving you for a riverboat captain?

I've never changed a fridge air filter. Hell, I'm still riding my water filter after being told by my fridge to change it for over a year.

I change the filter cause the blinking icon is annoying. " The air purification cartridge scrubs air of mold, viruses, and bacteria, and lessens the concentration of ethylene gas that hastens food spoilage."

So far, I've replaced mine once per year. I usually reset the warning prompt the first time, then once it goes red again, I get a new filter.

Called Fridigidaire about my ice maker that wasn’t really working ... got it installed a week ago...
Called...
Girl said “we recommend changing you filters every 6 months.. have you done this? This may be why it is not working”
I said “ the fridge was installed 4 days ago..I don’t think that’s the problem”

I hold the button down for 5 seconds every 6 months to reset the alarm....does this count?
