I have been “blown up” by numerous married or committed women
Is this different from the version of the quoted phrase sans the "up"? Like a phone call?

coming up on 41 years of marriage.
Got married in college..
Empty nesters now ..had no problem with that… retired and both home …no issue there…
We are happy…neither of us are very “high maintenance”….at least imo

I’ve got family friends that were in this boat, wife was super involved in her kids, they never were apart, and then when their youngest left for college they were divorced in a year.
We do a lot of things together without the kids now that they are older. Go on date night, quick weekend trips together etc. It's harder when you have a 5 year old I guess and we were certainly in that same boat at one point.

Most couples are generally unhappy, but are together for kids and money

Been together 42 years. There were rough moments along the way, no question. Both of us have our quirks - very different in some ways - but have learned to accept and appreciate as different doesn't mean bad much less fatal

Yep. Been with my wife now for 40 years.
I seriously out kicked my coverage and smart enough to know it.

Social media is ruining a lot of relationships because it has created unrealistic expectations.. I know a lady who is in her late 40s, divorced two times, has two teenagers, and is barely making ends meet. She’s also on the heavy side and heavily edits her online photos. She’s convinced that her next serious boyfriend will be a guy 20 years younger.

So I started working with couples as a therapist almost two years ago. The two things I’ve found with almost every couple I’ve worked with:
1. Apparently no one knows how to communicate anymore. I’ve never met so many people who CANNOT be honest and transparent with each other.
2. The perception that people have of marriage is often horribly skewed by a variety of variables (i.e. social media, societal expectations, etc). And when that perception is challenged they freak the frick out.
Yes, there are happy couples. There are some who just have to figure out their relationship can’t be their sole source of happiness. And there are some who definitely aren’t and have no idea how to get out of a relationship or are not willing to face that reality.

Yeah I feel like very few couples can get through the “trenches” period of having young kids without ending up more like co-parents than spouses. Frankly I think marriage is a fairly outdated concept and there is little upside for men, other than stability for their children, to get married in this modern day and age.

I’ve learned a long time ago to pick your battles even if you're 100% right. They’re all crazy though

I have no interest in signing a piece of paper that allows half of my life savings to walk out the door at any minute.
Besides, women treat you the best when they are auditioning for marriage and they are trying to close the deal.
It's hilarious how every woman thinks that she is the one that is going to convince you to commit where all others have failed.

You have more faith in prenups than I do.
Especially if you live in places like California.

Yep.
Together 21 years in April and married 17 years this past October 9th.
Marriage is work. It's also a privilege. And not enough people are willing to put in enough of the former to enjoy the fruits of the latter.

The couple that prays together, stays together.

A privilege? That’s a bit much.
