MMA?
Yes, mixture of Judo and aikido, and Karate.
I just find it to be a very practical method for self defense, and since most encounters people ever have are usually in close, it's a little more practical application leaning heavily on self defense using the persons weight and aggression against them.
Took White Crane, and it's beautiful and you get in some shape, but jujutsu is a little more practical or applicable to most encounters you may find yourself in life.

That may be or not true but what I meant was that deployment is a chance to put all your training to use. Most military are not highly train in hand to hand combat skills. We go through basic training. SOF get the more advanced training and they are bona fide badass and have nothing to prove.

yeah if you're still taking karate past 6th grade or so you're probably a little off

Was going to post something similar but you pretty much nailed it.

Where is this coming from? I had a friend who was a 2nd degree Black belt. He went to tournaments all the way through HS.

Your friend was probably weird.
Did he have a sword collection?

Someone post that pic of the chunky guy holding the sword with his naked wife standing behind him.

BJJ is pretty much ground submissions. If the school and instructor has a Gracie background, then some stand-up and takedowns are involved as well, but it is primarily a ground based martial art. The real upside to that is about 99.9% of actual street fights that last longer than a few seconds end up on the ground anyway so it's pretty important to know what you are doing down there.
I never did the karate thing. My family ran a boxing gym and I learned to box at a young age and still feel that is the best program to get a kid into. If you could find a school that taught boxing and BJJ, with some good wrestling mixed in, you would have one well rounded martial artist.

A side benefit is a lot of self confidence. I started tae kwon do in 4th grade. It has had a life long positive impact on me.
I highly recommend it.
Later switched to shotokan which I stayed with thru LSU. Awesome set of skills to have.
And I'm pretty sure I was not the weird kid. No swords, knives or throwing stars. 1 set of numchuks I have damn near knocked myself out with.
I highly recommend it.

Don't overthink the decision. If your kid has a desire to train, sign him up. The mental and physical skills will last a lifetime and benefit him beyond the dojo. Put your time in doing the homework to research the right style and Sensei. IMO, the more pure Japanese karate styles such as Shotokan are the way to go.

If he is taught right, that won't happen.
When I was in college in Jackson, one student thought he would pick a fight and kick someone's arse. Word got back to sensai. Sensai picked him out for sparring at the next class. Beat the hell out of him. Then told him karate was for defense, not bullying people.

Got my blackbelt at 13. Never been in a fight.

I only remember one outspoken kid that took karate. It gave him a false sense of confidence... he was in one fight in school and he tried to use his karate techniques. Other kid treated it like a street fight and beat his arse. Karate only works against karate. Various MMA would be better to learn.
