I burned exactly 4000 on my 120 miler this past Saturday. But it's less about distance and more about watts per second.

from a ride I did earlier this year, 97 miles in 5.5 hrs with 7700’ of climbing for an average of 190 watts. I burned 4155 calories.

More stupid than tone deaf;

The thing is they think that just bc the law says cars have to respect them and/or yield to them, they don’t understand that all it takes is one that wont/dont, and you’re a dead cyclist.

All the laws made to protect your little peddling feet don’t matter in your case anymore, bc you’re dead. There won’t be any arguing how they didn’t stop for you etc..bc you’ll be dead.

When I was riding regularly, I'd burn about 900 calories per hour @ approx 20-21 mph.

It is a cost benefit analysis, you and everyone else make those multiple times a day.

Agreed. I cycle, but keep it to paths that have developed bike lanes.

But it is their right (to the highway). They may never do it again, but it is 100% their right.

I hear you. The posted rules at most of the trails I go to run and bike say that the person passing is supposed to announce their passing. I run and bike often. I follow the rules. I stay to the right when not passing. The number of people I have made jump and, in fright move into the left “lane” is ridiculous. I do it too when someone says it to me. As such, have just gotten to the point that I slow way down and wait for the other person to see me before saying, “On your left” or “moving by” or whatever. The exception to this are related to the number of people who insist on walking, running in the middle of the trails, sometimes side by side with buddies, often with music playing loudly and probably a dog or two. That doesn’t sound like you at all. Those folks are oblivious and you have to holler at them. Keep running and going!

No idea why anyone would want to cycle in heavily trafficked areas anyway. Mainly because you have to stop every 5 seconds at a red light or stop sign. What good does that do.

I do 100+ mile rides regularly and make sure to ride in more remote areas with little vehicle traffic so i dont have to worry as much about being hit and i can ride for long uninterrupted stretches.

Why should automotive drivers subsidize cyclists? Shouldn't the shitheads pay their own extra taxes and registration fees?

Because you (poors) who are not wealthy enough to have free time to engage in an expensive hobby (cycling) should be subservient to us (upper class) and subsidize my hobby. Also you get to see what limits a human body can reach as you look up from your proverbial stoop of shitty health

Seen plenty of cyclists whose bodies were crushed by thinking they were exempt from the laws of physics vs. multi-ton vehicles. Guy probably wasn't thinking he was very superior as his guts where shot out of his butthole when a loaded dump truck ran him over.

The folks I know who are into cycling in my community are almost always very intelligent people (far from stupid). This has been my observation in the other towns I have lived in too. I am only tangentially connected to this local cycling group so please don’t think I am tooting my own horn in complimenting them. I’m in the local running club and fart around some with a triathlon club, but folks who go do such endurance sports things tend to all know each other in this smallish town. Anyway, the cyclists by and large strike me as being a kind, happy, encouraging, and fun lot who just love to ride. They are also typically very welcoming to newcomers. They will even let my poor bike handling self ride with them some when I am out on the local rails-to-trails route and happen into them. They are also a remarkably careful and cautious group. That’s why the overwhelming majority of them these days, other than on a Saturday morning group ride (with a whole host of safety protocols) and the occasional race with provided traffic support, rarely ever seem to me to ride on the roads anymore. That seems like a real shame. Not just because I wish they could do more of what they love, but also because I am firmly in the camp of believing that our country would be a healthier, happier, better place if more people made it a priority to get outside and exercise more. Cycling is a great option for that, better than running really for most folks I would guess because it is low impact, but it is what it is. Anyway, I will wrap up my ramble by saying the cyclists around here are smart, good people. They are doing what they need to do to be safe. They are teachers, small business owners, cops, doctors, nurses, pastors, etc… They are the sort you want to be friends with. Watch out for them. My town needs them. I need them.

In no way shape or form do I think going to Walmart via any means is enjoyable.

But not surprising that’s the store you mention.

Oh. My bad, I forgot you are a cyclist which means you never, ever, shop at the largest grocery store chain in America

But, I mean, your original post I responded to quite literally counters what you say now

quote:

I do know that loading up some bags on a bicycle and riding to the grocery store to do your weekly shopping is about the most fun you can have grocery shopping

Aka riding your little bicicleta to Walmart is “more fun” than riding in an air conditioned vehicle.

You’re rights my apologies, stupid is not right word.

My thoughts are if you are willing to ride a bicycle on public street, you have resolved yourself to fact, that shite sometimes shite happens and it may happen to me one day.

I agree the US is an obese country, and not enough people get outside and exercise etc, but surely cyclist knows the more they get on highway/streets with moving vehicles, the more they have chance to be flattened by distracted /over prescribed drivers right,
Even though it’s illegal for them to be flattened
