Are brandy and cognac as good as a whiskey or bourbon for, errr, medicinal purposes?

But seriously, the older I get the more inclined I am to have congestion. No, it isn't like chronic, and yes, I will consult with my doctor the next visit, which is March 23.
Anyhow, sometimes these days I have just a shot of whiskey or bourbon when I have a cough, and it actually does help. Does brandy and cognac work like that? Obviously, I'm not much of a drinker and am not knowledegable about those spirits.

Well sure. If you want to go buy a whole bottle just to find this out. If it doesn't work like whiskey or bourbon, why buy it since I have Makers Mark and Crown Royal already.

ha. That used to be my problem. I was a binge drinker but it was beer. I have been quit for years. I have learned, though, that I can have a shot or two or whiskey, and not be inclined to drink all night or for a couple of days like with beer.
I do like most red wines, but I know that wine doesn't soothe a cough like whiskey does. Since brandy and cognac are made from grapes, I figured they wouldn't work like that either, but didn't know, which is why I asked.
