Back when I was getting my 1st degree in the mid 80's a roomie of a friend had a 75 gallon long with gravel and a 15 year old Oscar, that's all as every night the fish would rearrange the gravel completely.
He hand fed the fish jumbo shrimp, that's all it would eat. It once went on a hunger strike and 3 weeks later the GF hand fed it some oatmeal cookie she made, then it resumed the shrimp. For a poor teen/early 20's college student the fish ate better than it's owner!

I'm thinking about doing a 75 gallon discus tank or a saltwater fish only.
Thinking of going in this direction myself, but it's been years. Could use some recommendations.
What kind of filer, etc. What's the easiest thing to use for substrata that won't be a pain in the arse to clean?
Alternatively, I may go with a 20 gallon tank for a betta and something she won't attack, and a 50 gallon aquarium for other fish.

Fresh or salt?
I loved the fluval canister when I had fresh. As others have said, you can run carbon and bio balls with cheap filter floss as your polish pad. It's a pain in the arse to clean but you don't have to do it near as often and if primed correctly, it's silent. The water in my cichlids tank was always clear.
Bastards would tear up the tank though so I gave up on any soft substrate or plants.

I bought a Penn Plax Cascade 700 on Amazon. For price I'm pretty pleased.

It'd be best to stick with fresh until I know what I'm doing, right?
The only experience I've ever had is a couple half-gallon betta bowls and 1 five gallon tank with some tetras and tiger barbs, and that was a decade ago.

I have two 30 gallon saltwater tanks.
One predator tank: puffer, trigger, Damsel
Reef tank: coral, clowns, red shrimp

My last setup was a 16 gallon saltwater aquarium. It's too expensive to get back into and I will do so once I get my student loans paid off

Amazon has great prices on tanks.
I'll probably go this route.
What type of filter should I get for freshwater discus?
Canister?

Canister. It's way quieter and pumps a ton of water. I've got mine set up with a spray bar going across entire back of tank. It's about an inch below water level and angled 45 degrees so it pushes water just over water line and aerates at same time. It's way quieter than power filter

I had a 39 gallon but I got rid of it after my tiger Oscar died. I got him when he was 2 inches long and he was huge when he died.

My buddy's dad had an Oscar that lived to be 14 years old.
He had a ton of personality.
I used to love going to his house and watching him feed it.
It started out as a community tank but the Oscar ate everything in it so it was an 80 gallon with one fish

Petco does the $1 per gallon sale. I'd wait for it, it's unbeatable. Grab a cheap 55gal long. Discus won't need a lot of flow so either a hang on the back or a canister. I like the fluvals.

Stupid question here: what is a discus?

20 gallon nano reef. Clown and corals.

Got a 5 gallon reef in my office. Clown, anemone, porcelain crab, peppermint shrimp, torch, blasto, hammer, lobo and frogspawn.

Mark Evenden dispels some long-held myths about these iconic South American favourites. It's high time the facts were separated from the fiction, about Discus. Beliefs passed through the hobby may not be necessary, benefical or even accurate - as you'll discover:

Nice.
Think I'll wait for Petco to do it's sale and get a 5 gallon and a 75 gallon.
