One of the questions on the application ask if it's ok to contact employer, really not wanting my current employer to know I'm looking for another job. How should I answer this question?

Say that it's not okay for them to contact your current employer.

if your boss is a woman im sure she will respond (because she can't take sick days right now) rationally and not make it about her

Answer no, that is why they have the question, they know it is generally not a good thing to let your employer know you are looking for another job.

I would say No, but make sure you included other references with your application. Most reasonable hiring managers understand you are looking for a job for a reason. Just make sure you can explain why you are in the market for a new opportunity in a way that doesn't make you sound like a lazy, millennial POS.

Why are you posting this question? What other answers are you expecting besides "no" and "piihb?"

If you don't have a good relationship with your supervisor, ask the to hold off unless they are ready to make you an offer.

If you don't want them to contact your employer then obviously put no. But I am sure a lot of people leave Burger King to go to McDonalds so.... It really doesn't matter.
