App Store Accountability Act

These laws have been adopted in Alabama, California, Louisiana, Texas, and Utah.

These laws require age verification to download any app. Louisiana's law was originally supposed to go into effect in July 2026, and now it's scheduled to take effect in July 2027. Here is the text, which is rather creepy.

There are 2 different versions- the red state version and the blue state version. They are described in the r/linux post I linked.

The red state version has passed in Texas, Louisiana, Utah, and Alabama. It's also been proposed but (so far) failed to passed in a few other red states. The red state version applies at the app store/Google Play level.

The blue state version of the law would apply at the operating system level. The blue state version has passed in California. It's also been proposed but (so far) failed to pass in a few other blue states. The blue state version of the law applies at the operating system level.

So 4 red states and 1 blue state have adopted these laws. But the one blue state that has adopted the law has adopted an even worse version of the law than the 4 red states have.





There's also a federal version of the law being pushed by some congressional Republicans. (Including FL Republican governor nominee Byron Donalds, who might push such a law in Florida if he wins the governor race.)




META is heavily pushing the law and seems to have come up with the very idea of the law.
