Even then, no thanks. I don't even want Veteran's Day honestly. I stay off social media for that entire day. I have buddies that showboat it as their entire identity...plastered all over their trucks and weave it into conversations regularly. You could walk through my house and never know my wife or I served, and she spent more time in Iraq than I did...that was another life.

I told a buddy that serves happy veterans day on Monday, and I think he felt kind of awkward about it. I imagine he would echo what several others have said that he volunteered and doesn't want recognition. I still respect the hell out of him though.

I have a buddy that got half of his arse blown off in the desert. He talks about a lot of things that happened with him and his fellow Marines. many conversations lead to Marine talk. The one time he never mentions it is on Veterans Day when we go eat lunch. He is not looking for a free meal.

When I told him I was from BR, he was quite disappointed that I didn't know a Marine named Guidry from Lafayette.

Correct. I am a vet also. Way too many undeserved benefits. The military is a cross section of society. There are some awesome people in the military, but there are also a lot of shitheads.

Let's reserve that for teachers and nurses.

I'm about to go have cocktails with two friends(retired O-6s,) who were involuntary guests at the Hanoi Hilton for a few years in the late 60s, early 70s, pretty humble guys, at least for fighter pilots, they, and their families, made quite a sacrifice for our country

Damn, I'm not a vet so I couldn't say it but glad someone did.

There has to be some way to differentiate between actual veterans of foreign wars that were drafted and actually served in combat getting shot at, and Joe Blow from Kokomo that signed up out of high school for the benefits and the free tuition and all that and never did more than stock a warehouse somewhere in California for 4 years.
Don't get me wrong, all of them deserve respect and, truthfully, I'm too big of a pussy to have done any of it. But I'm not gonna go around thanking every dude for his service because he happened to sit at a desk for 4 years and go surfing.
And don't get me started on the stolen valor pricks that pretend they were getting blown up in Iraq and they never left Louisiana.

They get discounts special mortgages etc etc.

Now if they were drafted, sure. But everyone currently in the military chose to do what they do.

They are to be respected, but we aint gotta jerk em off all the time.

In my experience very few want to be jerked off all of the time. I suspect they mostly appreciate veterans day and standing up at a ball game or something to be recognized but a lot of that has to do with them making the crowd feel good about recognizing them for their service. As far as discounted goods and services I am of the opinion that anyone who is offered such should take it no matter why its being offered. Yes, it is all about marketing, but it is also about some few people saving a few bucks and thats a good thing....even if it is passed onto others who don't get the discount.

I have been fortunate enough to work with the military a LOT and I get the feeling it is a job like any other for those doing it. A sizeable number get in the military because its a better path to whatever their goal is than many of the alternatives they had. I am sure some join out of a sense of duty or patriotism but for most its a means to an end. I appreciate their service, I admire the quality of most of their character (I am not delusional, I have seen some scum bags in the military) and I telegraph this in the same manner I do anyone who I appreciate - by being civil, open minded and friendly. I will say that some of the finest people I know are in or have just recently separated from the military....and none of them seem to think they are special for having served. I am sure they exist but in my experience they are at best rare.

Same here. It's not why I served and I feel awkward when someone recognizes my service.

I found the best possible response when someone says "thank you for your service". My response is "thanks, you were worth it".

Bodies fill the fields I see, hungry heroes end
No one to play soldier now, no one to pretend
Running blind through killing fields, bred to kill them all
Victim of what said should be
A servant 'til I fall

Soldier boy, made of clay
Now an empty shell
Twenty one, only son
But he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care
Do just as we say
Finished here, greetings death
He's yours to take away

Back to the front
You will do what I say, when I say
Back to the front
You will die when I say, you must die
Back to the front
You coward
You servant
You blind man

No, the Marine Corps Birthday on November 10th is the only day I celebrate with my fellow grunts. The only Marine I.D. I publicly always have is the emblem on my truck, and the generic “veteran” on my drivers license.

I’ll usually not wear USMC ball caps at the grocery or most public places to avoid the thank you for your service accolades. Although I do always appreciate the sentiment and thank them, I signed up and knew what was ahead.

Tell your combat vets “glad your home” instead, they’ll appreciate that.

I do appreciate all vets in all branches in any MOS, it’s a life changing experience.
