We are talking dogs.
Don't compare this to freaking bears.

A bear? I'd just try to look as intimidating as possible while at the same time try not to soil myself.

Point being that a grown male is usually not prey to all but a very small number of beasts.

LOL pretty much exactly what my buddy said. Hey dude, you catch any fish this weekend?

It's not in most people's nature to immediately think "I should kill this animal before it kills me". Which is why most people get scared and run when a dog approaches them barking.
If you can make yourself get over the fact that you may have to seriously injure/kill an animal, I don't see why you couldn't kill an oncoming pitbull.
I'm not saying it'd be easy or that I wouldn't be physically messed up for the rest of my life, but I'll be damned if that thing doesn't come away with no eyes and broken bones.

I don't see any human winning a fight with one of these guarding their young.

This question has been posed before and I remember thinking that I could do it.

I'd easily kill a pit bull but a swan would def kill me

Yeah, that's a completely different ballgame.

In sum, I think you're both wrong. A pit that wants to kill a grown man is rarely successful. A black bear that wants to harm a grown man is rarely successful in causing serious injury or death. If you fight, you'll probably win, but at some cost to yourself.
I dunno. I'm pretty confident about my chances with a pitbull.
I'm also quite positive a black bear would tear my head off and sh*t down my neck.

Seriously, how hard is it to strangle a dog?

Based on my extensive experience, not very.

A Caucasian Ovcharka is pretty badass too.

Yeah a pit bull wouldn't exactly be the last dog I would want charging at me to attack.

Well, if an apples to apples comparison (fight to the death), of course you're right.
But humans "win" fights with black bears most of the time when they survive the encounter relatively uninjured and the black bear runs away. Again, the bear reference was just to illustrate that grown men are capable combatants with nature, as exhibited by how animals usually give up before causing significant harm to grown men. Women and children obviously fare worse.

Funny thing is that if you truly believe that you would destroy the dog in front of you, there's a good chance the dog with back down. I have seen it happen.
