Yes. I had an abscess under my back tooth that was literally pushing the tooth up out of the socket. The most painful experience in my life. The root canal was not bad and after it was done, it felt like someone turned off a switch for the pain. No pain whatsoever. The dentist put a post in and sent me to another guy for the crown. Second guy gave me a temporary crown until the real one was made. Went back a week later and had the crown put in place. Wasn't a big deal, except when I got my bill.

I had a temporary filling crumble and fall out while on vacation. Could not chew on that side of my mouth the rest of the trip or an intense jolt of pain would shoot through my mouth.

Yea, I got my back tooth cracked and had to get both
Dentist had to shoot me up three times before I was finally numb enough to not feel him drilling
Absolutely miserable procedure

Had root canal and crown done last year....did not have dental insurance so I signed up for dental insurance thru Affordable Family Dental Services on-line on monthly basis(about $50 for registration and first month premium).no wait period...found participating dentist and saved over a grand..then canceled dental insurance ...

Just be forewarned that there are a lot of general dentists out there doing really shitty jobs on molar root canals. As a dentist, there aren't many general dentists I'm trusting with a second molar. I'd pay just a bit extra to see an endodontist (root canal specialist). He'll do it in half the time and twice as good. The general dentist still does the crown afterwards.
Don't take shortcuts and think you'll get by with just a filling afterwards. A tooth is basically "dead" after a root canal so it becomes more brittle. If you don't crown it, it will eventually break and you'll have to pull it. I've seen so many patients waste money on a root canal by not crowning the tooth afterwards.
Lastly, some root canals fail on cracked teeth, depending on the location and severity of the crack. Another reason I'd see an endodontist.
If you just go with the general dentist because he's cheaper, tell him, " I want to see the x-ray when you're done to make sure you nail the apex." That'll keep him on his toes.

Bingo, I've heard my wife say the same thing. She refers most second molars out and doses crown after. (Unless it was mine, then she would probably just do it no shots)

If it's done right it's relatively painless (they're removing the source of the pain: the infection and nerve/root). Maybe some tenderness in your gum for a day where they do the work and some adjustment to make sure the bite is good with the crown.
If it's a molar, look for an endodontis to do it.

I can ask him for a recommendation. Otherwise I don't know any endodonist. I am in the Northshore in Madisonville. My dentist said if the pain goes away then I should be good. If it persists then I will need a root canal and crown.
Thanks

Dr. Bonson in Slidell is excellent.

I had a root canal done last week and porcelain crown will be placed in a few weeks. Root canal was not painful at all except for a little soreness the day or two after the procedure. It definitely went smoother than I expected.

I would have many more Root canals before I would get a vaectomy again.

Damn that sucks. Luckily I didn't swallow mine, and I had it glued back in under 2 hours. She didn't even have to regrind it-only clean the chocolate and the caramel (twix bar) off of it.

Yeah it's not a good idea to leave a temp crown off. Even if you don't feel pain(you won't if the RCT is done), the adjacent teeth will slightly shift toward the empty space and the crown that returns from the lab won't fit as well.

I learned this lesson the hard way. That four hour root canal I mentioned in another post....done by a regular dentist. Not saying he was a horrible dentist by any means(he was awesome for the most part). I just don't think he should be doing molar root canal(all of my root canals have been on my molars).
And guess what...couple years later that exact tooth abscessed(a very painful one at that)....requiring me to get ANOTHER root canal on the SAME tooth and another crown. At this time I was seeing a new dentist(other one had moved out of state). Dentist showed me xrays where another old root canal/crown would need to be redone soon or it too would likely abscess.

Me TOO!!!!! Mf didn't give me enough local Anastasia!! He does right side, no problems. We are talking about duck hunting, smoke floating off my junk, then he goes to left nut, clamps down on it and BAMMMM I flew off table instantly soaking with sweat! He releases his pliers and nurse says "sir do you have problem getting numb at dentist?" I said in a panic "lady this isn't the fricking dentist office if you haven't noticed!!"

yes. root canal isn't so bad but taking the tooth off for the crown sucks.
vascetomy wasn't that bad. Recovery took a while but actual procedure was 10 mins and pain free

Can you get wisdom teeth out without going under? By the way I heard root canals are easy now a days.

Me ex got his wisdom teeth out with just injections to his gums to numb area. He said it was horribly painful and the dentist just told him he was confusing pressure with pain. Ended up with 2 dry sockets as well.
His experience had me so anxious when I had to have mine out that I insisted on iv sedation and the oral surgeon gave me Valium to take before the procedure to calm me down.
