Been swimming my whole life and to this day it strikes me as odd when a grown, able-bodied person says they can't swim.

The body naturally floats. All you have to do is lightly kick your legs and move your arms under the water and your head will stay above surface. Not talking about being caught in turbulent water conditions or a rip tide. Just a normal swimming pool. Or a calm lake.

Anyone here not know how to swim?

I didn't know how to swim till I was like 18. To learn I purposely jumped off a tree into a small river.

I still don't call what I do "swimming"

It is more like "not drowning"

Subtle "I have a black friend" brag.

I was getting a crew prepared for a project we are working on and we were making small talk about HUET and Water Survival Training. Was surprised how a handful of the guys on the crew took the class and admitted they didn't know how to swim. And it was a mixed group of people, all healthy males in their 20s - 30s.

Still, I'm sure you realized by just lightly moving your extremities you didn't sink to the bottom.

I'm fat so I don't need to know how to swim. Cause I float.

Right. I can get back to shore or the edge of the pool if I jump in.

I'm just not winning any races.

I still, however, have not figured out how to tread water. That seems like fricking magic.

I remember years back there was a big family gathering on the Red River.

Bunch of kids and adults.

Kids were playing in the river, adults on be shore.
No life jackets. None could swim.

One kid went over an underwater ledge. Struggled and grabbed on to another one.

They went over. One by one they tried to grab onto the next one. None of whom could swim.

They’d struggle then go under with the rest.

The adults stood on the shore, unable to swim.

7 kids of various ages drowned.

It blows my mind how people will be around water deeper than they are and not have a least a basic idea how to swim.

Lay your arms out to your side and either pedal your legs like you're on a large underwater bike or move your legs back and forth in a scissor motion. Easy peasy.
