Doesn't always have to be someone well known; just someone attractive. A big scam going on this way is called pig butchering. They use the fake profile to butter these guys up then pitch a big investment deal through bitcoin. They set them up with give us $500-$1000 to start, and they have a fake investment website that will show them how much they made off this small investment. This then ropes them in to give them big dollars for even bigger gains, and that's when they really have you.
A truly awful scam. Preys on two things many men want: to be desired and to have financial security in retirement.

Yes.
Mainly because most people don't care what old people that they aren't related to are doing on social media. Don't get me wrong, we don't want to hear about them getting scammed out of their money. But we don't care enough about social media posts to go around clicking on random threads to see what others are commenting about
