UV light is sometimes used to destroy pathogens in water, so it makes sense it could be used to destroy pathogens in air.
No it doesn't. What do you base that huge leap on?

This is regarding the installation of a UV light.
Fluorescent light =/= UV light
That's what I was thinking... UV light kills off organic pathogens/allergens like mold spores and pollen.

Yes UV light. That's what I meant. Sounds like my instincts are right and this isn't really worth it.

Are you saying UV light isn't used to destroy pathogens in water?

I understand UV light kills things; however, do you realize how strong that thing has to be....
Sounds like he was trying to sell you something you don't need...
They use this devise, in the hospital where I work, to disinfect pt rooms, it's called an Iris.. It's basically a tanning bed turned inside out.. That thing puts out so much heat, it smells like it's almost burning dust in the room...

I am saying I don't see anything to confirm that UV light kills pathogens in air ducts.

I haven't looked into the research either. I'm just saying it's possible.
Posted on 3/8/16 at 8:45 am to upgrayedd
Lot's of things are possible. And this salesman is selling just that, a possibility. If OP isn't chronically sick with respiratory illness, why are we even talking about this?

Work with two HVAC experts. They do not work. Do not get it. Change ur filter regularly and keep it dry. This is a salesman trying to get ur money

It's possible, it's a legit thing... now the effectiveness of it, that's up for debate.
Just do a quick google search for UV air purifier, there are companies in BR that will install, or you can buy one off of Amazon.

Dude, UV lights have been known to have airborne allergen killing properties. Just like how mold won't grow in direct sunlight, UV lights emit many of the same properties as Sunlight and kill mold and bacteria.

There's a difference in light and UV light though.

Hospital grade MERV rated filters FTW.

UV lights are used in tissue and cell culture laboratories around the world for this exact same reason. UV light at very specific parameters is an excellent method of sterilization. On the other hand, the lights need to be changed very frequently because as soon as the output drops out of those very specific parameters then it is worthless. In labs, they are supposed to be inspected every 3 months and are usually not sterilizing very well by 6 months.

This is correct. UV Light will kill mold and bacteria. How effective one UV light filter is in an HVAC system is debatable.
There are companies selling "voodoo" behind the technology by offering handheld UV lights and other products to disinfect but it's reasonable to assume those wouldn't be powerful enough to do anything. That doesn't mean UV lights will not kill mold and bacteria though.

But I'm not. I'm a sweet guy. I don't want Ryno to waste his money...that's all.

They are also used in commercial marijuana indoor grow houses to keep mold from forming on the crops.
