Read the bylaws. It may just need to be approved by a committee and painted to match your house etc.

I agree, but these people seem to have no teeth anyway. They cant even get people to stop parking on the street.
Get the HOA to ban people from parking in the driveway. I've lived in HOA that forced you to use your garage.
You could always add connected storage to your physical house.

Get a copy of the HOA bylaws and read through them. There should be a process to apply for a waiver from the HOA, although if its denied you wouldn't really have much recourse because I'm pretty sure HOA bylaws are filed with parish/county building permit office. Where I live, you need a building permit to build a shed. County/parish would likely deny a building permit for something that's prohibited by HOA bylaws. So you risk running into fines from HOA (which they could put a lien on your property if you don't pay the fine) and the county/parish could also fine you and force you to take the shed down.
HOA's suck in certain situations, but at least it prevents nice looking neighborhoods from turning into shitty looking neighborhoods over time because a few people start making awful looking exterior modifications or paint the outside of their house with bright/loud colors.

why would anyone live in a place where someone else gets to decide what you can do on the property YOU work to pay for?
So they don't have a couple of neighbors who start doing ugly shite to their houses that ends up having negative impact on property value for surrounding houses.

Exactly.

I talked to a fellow who was building "a nice one. $$$" as you say to keep his lawnmower and such in. He knew it violated the rules but figured folks would not object since it was so nice and $$$ and all.
He was wrong. Same crew he paid to build it had to be paid again to tear it down once the HOA tore his arse up.
And, perhaps most important, now his neighbors think he is a jerk.
I would imagine that if he was never given a copy of the rules he was agreeing to it would be difficult for the HOA to prove he was violating something he agreed to. Also, I can't imagine the HOA would be willing to spend lots on legal fees to fight this in court. Personally I would talk to an attorney about your options.

This. I never understood why people do this other than trying to keep up with the Jones's.

I would imagine that they will approve a shed as long as it is not ridiculously big or some horrible color. I doubt they have a policy of no sheds no matter what, although I could be wrong.
Why not just contact them and let them in on your plans?
Otherwise, just build the damn thing and keep it classy. Unless they are total dicks then I don't see them causing a problem. They don't seem to be too worried about it since they aren't even bothering to get packets out to new homeowners.
I will never live in a neighborhood with an HOA again. NEVER!

Love having an HOA. Especially living in the suburbs of BR. So many trashy people and I don't want a large property to where neighbors don't matter.
You can probably get the shed approved if it matches your home. A waiver can be made even if guide/restrictions state it cannot.

to each their own
all the houses looking the same from the street is not a nice looking neighborhood IMO

Isn't this the role of your municipality?

houses looking same has nothing to do with HOA's.

they kinda go hand in hand though
most HOA neighborhoods, especially in the South, fit this stereotype
and they kinda to though, as a lot of HOAs only let you plant certain trees/shrubs, certain brick, certain color, etc

I guess HOA's are the answer to the alternative of living in very high taxing nice neighborhoods that keep the poors out (think Westchester, NY, where property taxes are often $15-25k+/year)
There are towns up here that can do this because you need to be uber wealthy to live there- it keeps the trashiness (and HOA's) to a minimum.
