Why are paramedics paid so little?

1) Its a relatively new profession
2) Most aren't licensed, only certified.

I make a little more than the average police officer..

I appreciate what you do. I know what you have to deal with and have been a patient in more recent years. I even got to ride in the Acadian helo ... but don't remember it. Thanks.

Gotcha. Just seems that yall should be paid more considering what yall do.

As a floor nurse...I've luckily never had to stop at the scene of an accident. You are right, I wouldn't know what to do really I'm just a peds nurse. Kids go bad on us we have everything already by us, doctors we can call, and a PICU literally right next door to our unit. We bag em if need be, start up a code and get them next door to PICU asap so they can intubate them.

Thanks for the consideration lol, but that won't happen anytime soon.. they are just finishing changing the education standards. Luckily I went to an accredited school and got my degree early cause one day it'll be required.

You'd be surprised how much shite we have on an ambulance. I will say I've only ever had two ped codes. One was a drowning, and one was a 26 week birth which was a TOTAL clusterfrick..

Those are NEVER good. Parents don't realize that usually if their child survives a drowning...there will almost always be brain damage.

Drownings are a big problem out here with the number of swimming pools we have. You constantly see stories on the news of kids drowning at least once a month here(maybe even more). Just really sad.

The kids are the only ones that stick with me. I don't start cryin or anything like that. I just feel a ting of sadness. I suppose the worst effect it has had on me is I can picture in detail what people on the scene were going through in accidents like happened a few days ago on Bluff Rd. The ranking officers with the P'ville F.D. are all old friends of mine.

My life was saved about a month ago when my kayak was flipped in some class 4 rapids

my buddy is luckily a Green Beret, or I'd have been in really bad shape

I wouldn't know. I remember them loading me and then the medic poking a needle in my arm. Although fully awake I don't remember the next week. Freak motorcycle accident. It stopped all my involvement in emergency services.

Yeah, saved some 400 pound Latino dude out of the wave pool at blue bayou back when I was 16. Idk if he would have died if I wasn't there but he wouldn't have had much of a chance. He was heavy as frick to drag all the way to the entrance

A couple of weeks ago I saw this 2 year old running on the sidewalk with her mom running behind here. She veered off course on to the road and almost right in front of a car doing about 25. I grabbed her and brought her back. I think she could have been seriously hurt.

The parents were very thankful. They seemed like decent people who genuinely cared for their child. It's hard to track these little guys 24/7.

You gotta have a way to deal with stuff or you won't last long in that line of work. I had the attitude that I didn't cause it. I was just there to make things better. That allowed me to put it all behind immediately.

What's the difference between a medic and a paramedic?

Back in the day medic was short for paramedic. It has changed so much that I can't say for sure.

It sounds like 2 different classes. If they are starting to offer college courses I would expect a different title. That is all new to me.

Medic is a general unofficial term we use to refer to emts and paramedics.. so when i say medic, i mean I have been an emt/paramedic for 5 1/2 years, emt for the first 2, and a paramedic for 3 1/2

What I really hated was to have a floor nurse or a Dr. on the scene. They out ranked me but had no idea what to do. On the other hand it was so much easier when working with paramedics and people with E.R. experience.

You really think so? Those protocols are the easy part. Figuring out why they coded and correcting it is the hard part. Don't pat yourself on the back too hard for pushing meds and following simple protocols. No offense and I may have taken it the wrong way and it does depend on what doc shows up.
