Yep, cottonseed cakes was one of the go to baits. Other stuff I've seen used was cans of dog food with holes bunched through with an ice pick and if I remember things like vegetable remnants - lettuce head cores, corn cobs, etc. Anything that would raise a smell.

I seem to remember using dog food as well, but you know how you have certain clear memories of your childhood....going to get the cottonseed meal is one of the clear ones to me

Ohio River shrimp
Very tasty, haven't eaten them in years. I'd imagine the river is a lot cleaner now than it was 30-40 years ago with the amount of regulation put on industry

When I was younger, we had a camp next to the lock on Bayou Darbonne. We would set traps for shrimp and use them as bait. That was some of the best bait in the planet

Those shrimp you caught from the lilies were known as grass shrimp, and were used only for fishing bait. River shrimp were great with butter beans or with white squash. And I remember using watermelon rind and cottonseed cake as bait in the shrimp boxes.

At work, we have these giant river water screens that catch all the fish and sticks to protect the pumps. When you raise them up to clean them, there is usually at least about a half pound of river shrimp on the bottom plate. There's no way in hell I would eat them though, coming out of the Mississippi River.
