I’m fluent in Farsi after I eat a bunch of dried fruit.

I’ve never played cards with Russian so I don’t know if I could read him.

He seems fairly sophisticated, I’d bet “no”.

I'm learning Italian cuz I plan on getting the HELL outta of this country when I retire in 4 years. It's going OK. Shame because my grandparents spoke it but I was too young to pay attention.

IDK about apps, but when I want to brush up on Spanish I watch a TV program called 12 Corazones. It's some kind of Mexican dating game show and what they're saying is pretty clear from context.

I just signed up for Duolingo - figure I can spend ten to 20 minutes/day.
Thanks for the suggestion.

I was really good at foreign language in school. I had 4 semesters of German in high school and was so good at it I placed out of the 4-credit German class at South Carolina and took the next level - so I got 7 credits for 1 German class. Almost went into International Business with a German minor but didn't; just got a regular ole' BS in Business Administration (Finance) degree with a minor in Psychology. Stupid me.

How do you stay sharp with no one to talk to? I can do Duolingo all I want but when French TV starts talking or if I’m expected to say something to French person, I’m lost

I speak Spanish because I grew up spending my summers in Spain where I have family. Growing up, I'd speak it in the household with my grandmother. I took Spanish in high school and college. I have been totally immersed in multiple ways, and every time I go to Spain, after a few days I am perfectly fluent again. I still get REALLY rusty when I am out of practice. Like embarrassingly so...and I know enough to know that I sound bad.

I think the only way to stay sharp is to find a French friend and converse regularly with him, watch French TV every day, or just pick up and move to a French-speaking country.

Just wanted to say thanks for this thread. I used to do Duolingo fairly often and after moving I kind of got away from it. Spent some time last night on it after being away for a few years. Looks like they have made some much needed improvements. I'm going to dive back into it. Need something to stimulate the mind.

Just noticed that the Duolingo Plus has limited offline lessons. Pretty much anything outside of my house is offline for may do the 14 day free trial.

You know what, I am going to do the same and get back to the Russian. I really enjoyed learning it last summer.

What language are you going to dive back into?

I’m currently learning Russian

My brother had his bachelor party in NYC a few years back and we were all at this pool hall for a while throwing back drinks and shooting some pool. There was this dime piece of a waitress serving us.

One of my brother's buddies from college is a major brainiac. Philosophy doctorate but created some software that he sold that made him independently wealthy.

Waitress comes by and the philosophy guy just starts busting out some fluent Russian at her and she responded in Russian. I thought she was going to drop her panties right there in the bar. Apparently he heard a slight Russian accent when she spoke so gave it a shot, hoping she spoke Russian.

I'm not doing the interaction justice...it was probably the most pimp shite I've ever seen in all my days of going to bars and trying to pick up women.
